 (Jeremiah 17:7–10

We thank God for His goodness towards us last year and look forward to seeing even more of His blessings poured out among us this year as we put our trust in Him. Every new year, we may wonder: “Lord, would you bless me—my family, my finances, and my future?” We all want blessing, right? 我们都想要祝福,对吗?Every New Year I ask the Lord, “What do You want to say to us?” This year, Jeremiah 17:7–10 just jumped into my heart. “But blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in Him.” He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit. The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure; who can understand it? 人心比万物都诡诈,坏到极处,谁能识透呢?I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind, to reward a person according to their conduct.

Blessed is the one who is rich? Blessed is the one who is successful or trouble-free? Does God say that? No. 不是。Then what does it really mean to be blessed? Psalm 32:1 says: “Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.” 32:1 说:“得赦免其过、遮盖其罪的,这人是有福的!”Real blessing begins with forgiveness. Without God’s forgiveness, we may succeed outwardly but remain spiritual orphans, broken inside, fearful, and wounded in our relationships. But when God forgives us, and we forgive others, God’s power breaks generational curses and spiritual bondage. I once trusted money and success, but they left me empty. When I trusted the Lord and received His forgiveness, He healed me, and real blessing began to flow.

Here Jeremiah tells us: “Blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD.” Psalm 40:4 says the same: “Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn aside to false gods,” 40:4 也说同样的话:那倚靠耶和华、不理会狂傲和偏向虚假之辈的,这人便为有福!” It is very clear: blessing begins with trusting God. Trust is the root system.

Jeremiah gives us a picture: “He will be like a tree planted by the water… sending out its roots by the stream.” Trusting in the LORD is like a tree being planted by the water; they’re resourced by God Himself. That’s why Jesus says: But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. ( 6:33) When our roots are in God, provision becomes steady, not stressful. Here Jeremiah says, when you trust God and put your roots into God’s Word, two promised blessings are yours.

First, you’ll have no fear when heat comes. Heat can be pressure, challenges, crisis, and heartbreak. God never says, if you trust in Him, you’ll be trouble-free. But He has promised, “It does not fear when heat comes.” Faith does not remove pressure; faith determines how we respond to pressure. We see this in 1 Samuel 30. King David and his men came home one day, and everything was taken away by their enemies. Their wives, their children, and their possessions were all gone. Verse 4 says So David and his men wept aloud until they had no strength left to weep. This is real life. This is what “heat” feels like. We all experience crisis. Here everyone was grieving and hurting. But some people yielded to their feelings and did not trust God, and their grief turned into bitterness. Bitterness turned into anger, and anger turned into hatred. They wanted to stone David. This is what happens when we allow pain to grow and we don’t trust that God is in control; it becomes poison. When we stop trusting God, we start attacking people, blaming them, and judging them.

But King David did something different. Verse 6 says: “But David found strength in the Lord his God.6说:大卫却倚靠耶和华他的神,心里坚固。”David didn’t deny the pain. He didn’t pretend everything was fine. He wept too. But instead of letting grief turn into bitterness, he let his pain push him back into God. That’s what Jeremiah is talking about. When the heat comes, the tree that trusts the Lord doesn’t dry up; it sends its roots deeper. When we don’t trust God, pain can turn us bitter and stop us from growing. But King David let pain drive him closer to God. And because David trusted the Lord, God restored everything he had lost, and even more. God turned cursing into blessing. That’s what blessing looks like. Do you wanna be blessed? Do what David did.

The second promised blessing is this: no fear in a year of drought. A drought can look like spiritual dryness, financial pressure, relationship strain, unanswered prayers—whatever we’re facing. We see this in the life of Daniel. Daniel was living in a spiritual drought. He was in exile, surrounded by pagan worship, under ungodly authority. Yet he remained fruitful. Why? Because his roots weren’t in the circumstances; they were in God. Even when prayer became illegal, Daniel kept praying. And God honoured that trust. When Daniel was thrown into the lions’ den, God shut the lions’ mouths, lifted him up, and blessed him. That’s the life of someone whose roots are in the Lord. After all this blessing language, Jeremiah suddenly says, “The heart is deceitful above all things…” Why? Because our trust in the Lord is often challenged by our feelings, emotions, and human reasoning. Our hearts can say, “I need to protect myself,” “God is slow,” or “I’d better take control.” The Bible says the heart is deceitful. Trusting in the Lord means we don’t follow our own hearts, but bring them under God’s judgement. In the Bible, Abraham is one of the greatest examples of faith because he trusted God. In Genesis 12:2 God said to him, “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.” The Hebrew word for “great” is gādal; it means to grow, to increase, to be enlarged, to be lifted up by God. God was saying, “If you trust Me, I will cause your life to grow in influence, in blessing, and in spiritual authority.” But Abraham had to respond by faith. He left his home, his security, and his comfort zone.

It’s same for us. If we wanna receive God’s promised blessings on earth, we must respond by faith. Then in Genesis 22, God tested Abraham’s faith by asking him to give up his only son Isaac, whom he received when he was a hundred years old. Abraham didn’t hold back or protest, “Why me, Lord?” 亚伯拉罕没有保留,也没有抗议说:主啊,为什么是我?”He trusted God and obeyed, even when it was painful, believing God would keep His promise. After that, God said, “Because you have done this… I will surely bless you and multiply you.”

See? Faith along with action released gādal—increase and multiplication. Isaac didn’t inherit Abraham’s wealth, but Abraham’s trust. In Genesis 26, during a famine, the land was dry and everyone else was struggling. But Isaac stayed where God told him to stay and trusted the Lord. Verse 13 says, “The man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy.” 13说:他就昌大,日增月盛,成了大富户。”In Hebrew, it says Isaac gādal—he kept growing, increasing, and enlarging, until he was exceedingly blessed. We see even in a drought season, trusting God brought increase and blessing. God says, “I search the heart.” He is looking for trust. When God finds a trusting heart, He releases blessing and reward.

So this year, let’s choose not to trust our feelings, fears, or worries, but to trust what God says. Plant your roots in Him, stay in His Word, rely on the Holy Spirit, and keep walking with Him, even when it’s uncomfortable. And then God will gādal you: He will increase you, grow you, enlarge you, multiply you, bless you, and make your life a blessing to your family and others.

Prayer 祷告

Father, we thank You for Your goodness and for sending Your Son, Jesus Christ, to shed His blood for the forgiveness of our sins. He was rejected so we could be accepted. He suffered death so we could receive eternal life, freedom, and a new beginning today. Because of Jesus, we don’t have to live trapped in our past, our pain, or our mistakes; we can bring them all to the cross. Lord, search our hearts right now. We confess that at times we have trusted our feelings more than Your truth, our own judgement more than Your Word, and our circumstances more than Your promises. Because of this, we’ve been hurt, disappointed, and become grumpy.

If that’s you, just quietly say to God:

“Lord, forgive me. When the heat came, I turned to my feelings instead of trusting You. I believed negative thoughts and judged others. Today I turn back to Your cross. I repent. I break agreement with bitterness and every lie, and I receive Your forgiveness, to forgive myself and to forgive others. Jesus, we choose to trust You again. We place our hearts back in Your hands. Holy Spirit, come and soften what has been hard. Heal what has been wounded. Plant our roots deep in Your love and truth and stir our hunger for Your Word. As we trust You, Lord, turn our bitterness into blessing, our fear into faith, and our pain into new life. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
