 (Isa61:1-4, Luke 4:18-19)

Something happened this week, and I sensed God drawing us back to Luke 4:18–19, Jesus’ mission statement, and to Isaiah 61:1–4, where that mission was first spoken. So today, let’s look at both passages and see what God is gonna speak to us.

Isa 61:1-4, The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, 2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, 3 and provide for those who grieve in Zion, to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor. 4 They will rebuild the ancient ruins and restore the places long devastated; they will renew the ruined cities that have been devastated for generations.

1. Jesus came to heal the brokenhearted.

The word “anointed” comes from the Hebrew māshach, the root of the words Messiah and Christ. To be anointed doesn’t just mean being empowered. It means being chosen and appointed by God for a divine mission. Isaiah tells us what the anointing is for: 以赛亚书告诉我们,这个恩膏的目的是什么: to bring good news to the poor, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives, and speaks of the year of the Lord’s favour, 叫我传好信息给谦卑的人(或作传福音给贫穷的人),差遣我医好伤心的人,报告被掳的得释放,报告耶和华的恩年, which points to the Jubilee in Leviticus 25, when debts were cancelled, shame was lifted, and lives were restored. So in Luke 4 when Jesus stood up and said, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled,” He wasn’t giving a lecture. He was making an announcement: It’s happening now. God longs to heal broken hearts. Yet it requires faith.

In the Bible, a woman who had been bleeding for twelve years was healed because of her faith. but Jesus called out, “Who touched me?” Imagine how terrifying that moment must have been, coz people try to look good in front of others. To step forward meant exposure. It meant telling what had been hidden in secret. But she didn’t hide or withdraw; she confessed. Instead of receiving shame, Jesus called her “daughter.” Her fear was broken, and her heart was filled with peace. From Isaiah 61:1 to verse 4, we see a divine order: God desires to heal our hearts first, then He sends us to rebuild. Why is healing first? Because a broken heart struggles to glorify His name. A broken heart tends to put itself first.

2. Unhealed wounds shape our thinking.

Now what causes a broken heart? And how can we be healed? The word “broken” means shattered, crushed into pieces.

A, unresolved sin or guilt.
Unresolved sin, bitterness, unforgiveness, hidden habits, or carrying offences can break a heart from the inside. King David says in Psalms 32:3–4 that when he kept silent, his strength wasted away. But when he confessed, relief came. Healing begins when we confess our sins. When God first called me into ministry 20 years ago, He taught me: “Stop defending yourself. Turn to Me. Repent where needed, and leave the judgement in My hands.” As I kept practising this, something shifted. Healing flowed, and my heart began to change. I’m still practicing it as a way of trusting God.

B, betrayal. 背叛
Betrayal happens when someone you trust turns against you and breaks that trust. It shakes our sense of safety. It forms thinking patterns: “If I open up, I’ll get hurt again.” “I need to protect myself.” Small things can trigger big reactions, a tone of voice, a delayed reply, a simple question. When a person carries offence in their heart, they build walls to keep everyone out. You can’t get near them. Their marriage struggles. Their relationships break down. Because the offence in their heart blocks connections, with God and others. When the old wound gets touched, anger rises, suspicion grows, we blow up, we blame, and we get hurt.

C, Insecurity, fear and shame.

Psalm 109:22, I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me. When someone grows up with criticism, rage, fear, or shame, it forms thinking patterns. A strong voice can immediately feel like, “You’re telling me off.” Correction can feel like an attack, someone says, “You need to…” or “You should…” but the heart hears, “I’m not good enough.” “I’ve failed.” “You’re controlling me.” Pro6:23 says, correction is the way to life.

We all need correction; coz correction protects us. Yet a wounded heart hears it as rejection. Shame makes us defend ourselves, “I’m right”, or try to prove ourselves, “I must do a good job.” So performance becomes identity: “If I do well…if people praise me, I’m accepted.” That’s a lie. That’s how workaholism and praise-seeking grow. Underneath it’s all about fear, fear of rejection, humiliation, losing identity. Human praise may comfort or numb us for a moment but it cannot heal the heart. We’re called to freedom, not controlled by praise, not crushed by correction, because our identity is secure in Christ.

D, Rejection.

Psalm 69:20, “Reproach has broken my heart, so that I am in despair.” Rejection is powerful enough to keep the heart broken. When rejection from parents, leaders, spouses, friends isn’t healed, we become defensive. “I won’t be bullied again…I don’t need you to tell me…” 我不需要你来告诉我……”We react with anger, we disobey, we judge, and we withdraw. Old wounds get triggered by new situations.

But Jesus sees. He says, “my child, come to me, I long to heal your heart.” Isaiah 61 says the Spirit anointed Jesus to bind up the brokenhearted. How did He do it? Through the cross, where He was rejected, mocked, stripped, and publicly shamed. As Scripture says, He was despised and rejected. He could have called twelve legions of angels to defend him. He could have destroyed everyone who betrayed Him and called down fire from heaven and consumed the earth. But instead, with blood pouring from His body, He said, “Father, forgive them.”

He carried our shame, fear, and insecurity, so we don’t have to spend our lives begging for praise or proving ourselves. We are not loved because we perform well, but because Jesus paid it all to redeem us. He chose us as His Children. When He corrects you, He isn’t rejecting you, He loves you as His own. When He calls you forward, He is not terrifying you; He is restoring you. When situations trigger old wounds, He is not shaming you; He is inviting you to bring that wound to the cross, and let the old pattern die.

3. Healed hearts become rebuilders

As we trust Him, and push back rejection and pray: “Father, forgive me. I choose to forgive. I refuse bitterness. I choose the truth. My identity is not found in people’s praise, but in Your blood.” As you practise this again and again, the enemy loses access. The wound begins to close and becomes a scar, a testimony: “Jesus healed me here. He’s turned my brokenness into beauty here.” And it doesn’t stop with healing. Isaiah 61:4 says they will rebuild the ancient ruins. Healing is preparation for rebuilding.

OTBC’s English Class started 100 years ago. You can see the photo on the screen. It was a mission field where God trained missionaries and sent them out to different countries and places. But for many years the ministry stopped and lay in ruins.  Now it is being rebuilt. God wants to continue His mission through the English Class here. Who can be sent as rebuilders and restorers? Broken hearts struggle to bring glory to God, but healed hearts become rebuilders in God’s Kingdom. The wounded can become restorers when they learn to turn to Jesus.

Before the cross, Jesus told Peter he would fail, not to shame him, but to restore him. He said, “When you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” Luke 2232When you’ve turned from rejection, you can strengthen the rejected. When you’ve turned from insecurity, you can strengthen the fearful. When you’ve turned from shame, you can lead others out of hiding.

Healed hearts carry the anointing to rebuild broken walls in heart, in family, and the communities. Your healing is not just for you, it’s for your family, your children, your children’s children… and for all whom God has brought into your life to be restored and blessed. So today, where are you? Are you holding onto old ways of thinking because of old wounds? Or will you bring those broken places to Jesus and let Him restore you?

Prayer:

Amen, amen, He is for you. Your blood is for us. Your presence is for us. Your love is for us. Your healing is for us. We thank You for all that You’ve done on the Cross for us. In Your presence there is safety, healing, and every good thing. Lord, we come to You and thank You that You carried our grief and bore our sorrows. Thank You that on the cross You willingly suffered rejection, shame, and death for us, so that we may be healed and restored. Now, if you feel the Spirit prompting you during the sermon, you can repeat this prayer with me:

“Lord, today I bring my broken heart to You. You know the places where I have been hurt, the wounds I have carried, the betrayal, the rejection, the grief, the fear, and the shame. Forgive me for believing lies, that a strong or corrective voice means I’m not good enough, that I must do well, look good, and perform well to be accepted, loved, or praised. Otherwise I feel ashamed.

Today I choose to believe Your truth. Your correction restores me. Your truth sets me free. Your commands lead me to live in Your love. Jesus, You have shown me the way to life.

I receive Your forgiveness, I forgive myself, and forgive those who have hurt me, because like me they live in the flesh and we have all sinned. So I let go of bitterness, anger, and resentment. Lord, if I have made inner vows like: ‘I won’t be bullied again,’ ‘I must protect myself,’ today I repent. In the name of Jesus, I break every agreement with lies, rejection, shame, pride, fear, and every generational pattern that has influenced my life. Holy Spirit, tear down the strongholds within me, that keep me defending myself and closing my heart.

Jesus, thank You that I am loved. I am chosen. I belong to You. Thank You for carrying my pain, so the broken pieces in my heart can be healed. Fill my heart with Your peace and with Your divine love. Lord, turn my brokenness into beauty. And make me a blessing and a rebuilder, for my family, for my children, for the people You place in my life, and for the generations to come. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
