When David was being pursued by his enemies, his spirit grew faint and his strength within him was failing. His most urgent need was not for his circumstances to change straight away, but to return to God. In Psalm 143, David shows us the spiritual principle of returning to God: not by simply doing more, but by exercising faith—trusting in God and looking to Him. When David had done what was his responsibility and cast himself upon God in faith, he immediately made two heartfelt requests: let me hear of Your unfailing love, and show me the way I should go.
The outcome of faith is the salvation of the soul. Although David lived in the Old Testament era under the law, he was able to receive from God the true meaning of the salvation of the soul: we are saved by grace through faith. David truly was a man after God’s own heart.
“Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you.” David was not simply asking to hear God speak; he was asking to hear afresh of God’s unfailing love. When we are going through hardship, what we most easily lose is often not our belief that God exists, but our assurance that He loves us.
When our circumstances remain unchanged for a long time, we begin to wonder: Does God still care about me? Does He still love me? Does He still hear my prayers? I have been praying for so long—why is there still no way forward? It is easy for us to let our present circumstances become the measure of whether God loves us.
When David was in the wilderness without water, being hunted down and facing extremely difficult circumstances, he still said that God’s love was better than life. The cross shows us even more clearly that God’s love is not simply a comforting message, but the reality that Christ gave Himself for sinners. Even when we cannot yet understand what God is doing, we must not allow that to make us doubt His love.
(太26:39)In Jesus Christ’s prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, as He faced the cross, He genuinely experienced anguish, yet He still prayed to the Father: “Yet not as I will, but as you will.” Because of His perfect obedience, He continued to trust the Father’s love and became obedient unto death—even death on a cross. “It is finished.” On the cross, He completed the path the Father had shown Him to walk and accomplished eternal salvation.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, I confess that I often say that I trust in You, while deep in my heart I still hold on to my own will. Please forgive me. Although I know Your truth in my mind, because of unbelief, fear, pride, and self-protection, I am often unwilling to surrender the sovereignty of my life into Your hands, and therefore unable to understand the way You are showing me to walk.
Lord, please let me hear first thing in the morning the voice of Your unfailing love. Do not let my circumstances define me, do not let other people’s opinions control me, and do not let my own emotions determine how I live. Holy Spirit, please pour Your love into my heart and give me the strength and love to deny myself and lay down my own will. Help me no longer only to ask You to change other people or my circumstances, but to ask You to change me; no longer only to ask You to make a way for me, but to ask You to lead me in the way You want me to walk. Even if this is the way of the cross—the way of self-denial and laying down my life—please help me, as I remain in Your love, to say, “Lord, I am willing.”
In the holy name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
