The people of the Corinthian church were pursuing the wisdom, status, and pleasures of this present life, while neglecting the things of heaven. Paul reminded them: “If the dead are not raised, then let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.” The glory, wealth, and honour of this life will all perish in the end — for flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. But there is another way to live: to make Jesus Christ our all in all.

Just as Paul testified, “For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

Paul set an example for us. Whether in life or in death, his aim was that Christ would be exalted in him as always. Every step he took was in response to the call of God. He did not live for what is seen, but for what is eternal. His daily service, his running, and his suffering were all driven by his unwavering belief in the resurrection and the glory that is to come. He also carried this hope to those around him, labouring on earth for what is eternal — for flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.

Paul, in love, asked the Corinthians: “What do you really want?”And today, the same question is asked of me: “What do I truly desire?” Two kingdoms lead to two very different ends. Will I choose to be foolish — setting my mind on earthly things, doing what is right in my own eyes, delighting in the fleeting pleasures of sin, and awaiting the judgment to come? Or will I be wise — setting my heart on the things above, aligning my will with God’s, doing what is right in His eyes, delighting in the fear of the Lord, and receiving His reward in the end?

How brief this life is — all things shall pass away, but only that which is spiritual and imperishable is truly lasting. Lord, teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Let us often ask our hearts: “Where am I going? For whom am I living?” For all that is in the world will pass away, but the one who does the will of God abides forever. Lord, we set our hearts to follow the example of Paul — to live each day with the hope of the resurrection. To love You more than ourselves, to love what You love and hate what You hate. Not running for the fading glory of the flesh, but striving for the imperishable crown.
