Paul knew well the dreadful end of those who do not love the Lord. His words, “Let him be accursed,” were not spoken lightly but from a heart burdened to awaken the church to the fear of God. Not loving the Lord is no small matter—it is a matter of life and death, of eternity itself. In the church at Corinth, many were eager for spiritual gifts, preaching, and debating, yet they neglected their personal relationship with Christ. Paul urged them to examine their hearts: Are you doing all these things because you love the Lord? Or are they driven by pride, self-righteousness, or selfish ambition? He declares solemnly, “If anyone does not love the Lord, let him be accursed. Maranatha! The Lord is coming!”
Because of his love for the Lord, Paul was willing to lay down his life. Whether in life or in death, his one desire was that Christ might be magnified in him. Only those who truly love the Lord can stand firm in the spiritual battle; without a heart that loves Him, no one will be able to stand on that Day of judgment. Thanks be to the Lord’s grace, who through Paul’s declaration—“The Lord is coming!”—reminds us again that the kingdom of heaven is near. We must repent and turn back to Him while it is still called “today.” Let us turn away from our evil ways and walk in righteousness. For our ultimate hope is not in earthly comforts, but in standing unashamed before the Lord when He returns.
Lord, You laid down Your life for me, and through this I have come to know what true love is. While I was still a sinner, Your love was already revealed to me. You bore unspeakable suffering for my sake—You were struck on the face, spat upon, scourged, and crowned with thorns. From head to toe, there was no soundness in You. For my sins, You shed even Your last drop of precious blood. Because You loved me, You did not turn away, even unto death. In Your agony, You still prayed for me: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” Like a silent Lamb led to the slaughter, You were nailed to the cross in perfect obedience and love.
What unfailing and tender love You have, Lord! My heart has been utterly melted by the depth of Your love. Dearest Lord, how can I ever repay such wondrous grace? I have nothing to offer but my life, and so I present myself as a living sacrifice. All I ask in this life is to love You with an undivided heart, to bring You delight, and to follow in the footsteps of those spiritual giants who counted their lives as nothing, seeking only to glorify Your name. Lord, I resolve in my heart to be one who loves You. For those who do not love You will be forever separated from You, but those who love You will inherit eternal life and glory. Grant me, O Lord, an unwavering heart to love You, that I may walk daily in Your ways and live every moment for the glory of Your name.
