Paul testified to the Corinthian believers that his sufferings carried spiritual meaning and value. He bore witness that to live is Christ, and his thoughts and desires were fully aligned with Christ, having no agenda of his own—only the will of God. He said he resolved to know nothing except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. For the sake of fulfilling God’s will, he did not count his life dear to himself nor consider it of great value. He viewed his sufferings as a mission and trust from God, seeing every experience as an opportunity to build up others so that they too might receive comfort and salvation.
Lord, thank You for the deep lesson You have taught us through Paul’s life. So often, we are trapped in our own small worlds, unable to perceive Your heart. When we go through pain, we think only of ourselves and easily fall into grumbling or self-pity. But when we see all things from Your perspective and are willing to share the comfort we have received, our lives are enlarged. As Paul said, “We are comforted so that you may also be comforted.” His experiences teach us patience and strengthen our faith.
As I reflect on Paul’s passionate love for You, Lord, my heart is moved. I see now that all our experiences—whether sweet or bitter—are not merely for ourselves. The road You lead us on is meant to help others walk more securely and go further. Just as the Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep, and Paul suffered for the church, we too are called to lay down ourselves in daily life to build up others. Even in suffering and trials, we can believe that You will use it all to be a help to someone else.
Paul taught us, “No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.” This is so contrary to the world’s values. The world tells us to protect ourselves; the gospel teaches us to pour out our lives for others. Paul did not see suffering as a burden but found joy in being used to bless others. Lord, I pray that the Spirit which stirred Paul would move me as well. May my whole life—whether in joy or sorrow, success or hardship—become a channel of blessing for others. You, the Good Shepherd, laid down Your life for the sheep; I too desire to follow You closely, living by the comfort and hope You give, and bearing the image that delights Your heart.
