When the Corinthians began to value external letters of recommendation while neglecting God’s personal calling and the inner fruit of life, Paul did not defend himself with words. Instead, he pointed to the Corinthian believers themselves as living proof of his ministry. He immediately emphasised that he was not competent in himself to claim anything as coming from him, but that his sufficiency came entirely from God. The suffering he endured, the churches he planted, the gospel he spread—all of it was by the grace and commissioning of God. This became the testimony of his life: a witness to Christ.
Paul’s wordsbrought me back before the Lord and deeply stirred my heart. I once thought I could serve God through zeal, that with enough determination I could walk the spiritual path. But I was wrong. The truth revealed that apart from God, I am nothing and can do nothing. The more I come to know God’s holiness, the more clearly I see my own condition—weak, selfish, self-righteous, proud, and prone to wander from the truth. There is nothing I can rely on apart from God.
The closer I draw to God, the more I see my true nature. He has shown me that anything I am able to carry, live out, or stand firm in is only the result of His grace at work in me. Now, I long to follow the Lord like Paul did, with a humble heart—not relying on myself but trusting in His power. I no longer seek human approval, but I want to lift high the One who is made strong in my weakness. If not for His upholding, I could not take even one step forward.
Thank you, Lord, for giving us an example through Paul—one who exalted God and humbled himself. I desire to imitate Paul as he imitated Christ Jesus, acknowledging that I cannot carry out anything on my own. Whatever I can do, however I can live, and anything I can truly hold fast to in a spiritual sense—it is all by the grace of God. May I, like Paul, truly say, “It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.” May my life be a testimony of His grace and bring glory to His name.(郭牧师Pastor Guo)
