“This treasure” symbolizes the life and glory of Christ—it is of immeasurable worth; while “jars of clay” represent ourselves—weak, fragile, humble, and unworthy. Paul uses the contrast between treasure and jars of clay to emphasize an important spiritual principle: God is willing to entrust His glorious gospel to us weak human beings in order to show that the surpassing power is from Him and not from us. This contrast helps us understand that our value does not lie in ourselves, but in the “treasure” we carry within.

In reality, we often feel discouraged, inferior, and ashamed because of our weakness, failures, or helplessness. But Paul did not dwell on the weakness of the jar; he pointed out the key: “We have this treasure in jars of clay,” not to shame us, but “to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.” Paul always gives us great confidence, encouraging us to trust in God in all things and to fix our eyes on Him.

He pleaded with the Lord three times to take away the thorn in his flesh. God did not remove it but said, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Paul received this grace and later testified, “Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” Through Pauls experience, we see that every moment of weakness we endure is an opportunity for God's grace to enter—a moment when this treasure reveals His surpassing power.

Lord, I thank You for placing this priceless treasure in me, an unworthy jar of clay. Please forgive my past pride and self-reliance, for I often forget that You are the true source of all power—that the treasure is the key, that God is the center, and we are merely vessels carrying His glory. Now I am willing to repent and acknowledge my weakness and limitations. Help me no longer rely on myself, but hide in You, and by Your strength live a victorious life, so that through us, others may see the glory of God.
