This is a prayer of intercession written by Paul to the church in Ephesus. Though he was in chains and facing great hardship, he did not lament his own situation. Instead, he earnestly prayed for the believers. He knew well that outward circumstances do not determine whether a person can stand strong. What truly sustains the believer is the inner strength that comes from God – the Spirit working within our hearts, enabling us to stand even in our weakness. In our own journey of faith, behind every time we stumble there is often someone praying for us in secret. It is the Holy Spirit who places the burden of intercession for the flock on their hearts, moving them to weep and plead for strength for those of us who are weak. In the same way, Paul himself, even in prison, kept crying out to God on behalf of the church. His prayers sprang from the compassion of Jesus our Great High Priest and from the charge Jesus has entrusted to all who follow Him.

I remember that when I was at my weakest, almost ready to give up, the Lord spoke to me through a dream: I saw that my shepherd was weeping and praying for me. In that moment, my dull heart was touched by God’s love. I knew that God Himself was raising up shepherds to fight and intercede for me. That love opened my eyes to see that I was not alone, that God had not abandoned me. From that day, I began to understand that if I kept fixing my eyes only on my weakness, I would sink deeper and deeper. But when I turned my gaze to God’s heart and considered His steadfast work in my life, strength began to rise within me. I no longer stayed trapped in self-pity and failure, but chose to take up my cross once again and follow the Lord Jesus.

In the face of suffering, I have learned not to fear, but to give thanks. Every prayer, every tear shed by my shepherd, has become a sign of God’s love for us. For every painful circumstance is God’s refining fire, drawing us to know Him more deeply and to become more like Him. Without weakness, it is so easy to rely on ourselves; only through falling do we come to truly grasp His grace. Just as gold must be refined by fire, so faith must be tested by trials. I no longer pray only for God to take away my suffering, but ask Him for strength to stand firm in the midst of it.

When I read Paul’s prayer again, the words are no longer just lines on a page, but a living reality in my own life. Yes – God truly strengthens my inner being through His Spirit, according to the riches of His glory. Even if the outward circumstances remain hard, even if I still shed tears, I now know that these tears are not of despair but of hope. Today, I long to be like Paul – not only praying for myself, but learning to intercede for others, asking that God’s love and strength would be poured out on everyone who is weary and weak.

Lord, may more of Your people come to understand and treasure Your call: that we are a royal priesthood. Through intercession, Your church – Your Body – may be joined in oneness with our Head, the Lord Jesus, our Great High Priest. Let this bring down heaven’s power and wisdom, so that the members may uphold one another in the spiritual battle, growing into a strong and united army of the Lord. May we trample on snakes and scorpions, cause the enemy to tremble, and see You receive all the glory in Your church.
