Paul reminds us that as believers who’ve been called to live as new people in Christ, our words should reflect that calling. The word “unwholesome” literally means “corrupt” or “rotten”. It refers to any kind of speech that pollutes the heart — things like swearing, sarcasm, complaining, judging, stirring up conflict, boasting, or self-righteous talk. Such words not only hurt others, but also eat away at our own hearts.
However, we can’t control our tongues by willpower alone, for “no one can tame the tongue” (James 3:8). If our words are to change, our hearts must first be renewed by the Holy Spirit. Only when our hearts are filled with truth and grace will our mouths naturally speak words of life and blessing.
Lord, please forgive me. So often, when things don’t go my way, I get impatient or angry and say hurtful things. Your Word reminds me, “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” I know how painful that can be — a careless word can wound someone deeply, and I end up tasting the bitterness of my own words. If I don’t let the Holy Spirit rule my heart, my speech will only lead to decay and resentment.
Lord Jesus, when I think of how You lived, I see that Your words were always full of grace and truth. When You met sinners, You didn’t condemn them but reached out with compassion. When You faced persecution, You didn’t curse, but prayed for forgiveness. Even on the cross, You said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they’re doing.” In Your deepest suffering, Your words still brought healing, comfort, and hope.
Help me to follow Your example — not through my own effort, but by the power of the Holy Spirit. May the Spirit keep reminding me that what fills my heart will shape what comes out of my mouth. (路6:45)As You said, “A good person brings good things out of the good stored in their heart, and an evil person brings evil things out of the evil stored there. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” (Luke 6:45)
Lord, lead me to pray more and to dwell more on Your Word, so that my heart may be continually cleansed by You. May my heart be filled with Your truth and love, so that my words bring encouragement and build others up. Let my tongue be a channel of Your grace, bringing blessing to those who hear, and honour to Your name.
