Paul reminds us not to grieve the Holy Spirit but to get rid of bitterness, anger, rage, shouting, slander, and every kind of malice. After putting off these old-nature attitudes, we’re called to actively live out kindness, compassion, and forgiveness—these are the very qualities of God Himself. God’s love is patient and kind; He is full of mercy and grace, and He doesn’t treat us as our sins deserve. Even when the Lord Jesus was in His deepest pain on the cross, He prayed for us, saying, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they’re doing” (Luke 23:34). The heart of salvation is that God forgave us in Christ.
When Jesus taught His disciples how to pray, He said, “If you forgive others for their sins, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; but if you don’t forgive others, your Father won’t forgive your sins either” (Matthew 6:14–15). He also told Peter to forgive his brother seventy times seven. Then Jesus told a parable: a servant whose master forgave a debt of ten thousand talents, yet he grabbed his fellow servant who owed him just ten denarii and refused to let him go. This is just like us after being saved—so often ungrateful. We’ve received God’s great forgiveness, yet still refuse to forgive others. The result is that we hand ourselves over to torment until the debt is fully paid (Matthew 18:34–35).
Lord, how often have I placed myself in the role of the victim, keeping count of others’ wrongs, refusing to forgive, and being consumed by resentment and bitterness. But when I cried out for Your mercy in my weakness, I saw my own sin and was led by Your kindness to repentance. When I accepted Your forgiveness and forgave those who were also bound by sin, You restored my healing, peace, and joy. Lord, keep opening my eyes to see how much I owe You. The more I know I’ve been forgiven, the more I’ll love You—and the more I’ll be able to forgive others. Thank You for using every circumstance to let me experience the grace of both “being forgiven” and “forgiving,” learning through mercy to become more like Jesus.
Lord, You command us to forgive one another—not because I’m more righteous than others, but because You first forgave, pardoned, and saved me. In Your love, I choose to let go and forgive those who’ve hurt me. Please cleanse my heart from hidden unforgiveness and self-righteousness. May Your love, mercy, and forgiveness rule in me, so I live out Your character and become a peacemaker—bringing Your love to wounded hearts. May more people find forgiveness, healing, and freedom through forgiving others, and become messengers of Your love, sharing the great love of Your cross!
