Paul reminds us that in our spiritual battle, we are not only to put on the full armor of God, but also to take up one defensive weapon — the shield of faith. Faith means our steadfast trust in God — believing that He is faithful, righteous, and loving, no matter what we face. Even when reason cannot understand, and our thoughts cannot make sense of what is happening, we still choose to trust completely in Him and in His Word.
The Roman shield was over a meter high, covered with leather, and soaked in water before battle to extinguish fiery arrows. In the same way, our faith acts as a spiritual shield that can quench all the fiery darts of the enemy. These fiery darts include accusation, fear, mockery, criticism, judgment, temptation, deceit, pride, jealousy, and every thought that causes us to doubt God’s goodness — thoughts of shame, discouragement, and unbelief. From Genesis onward, Satan has always tempted people to question God’s goodness. His schemes have not changed.
Faith does not work automatically; it must be taken up and lifted. Faith needs practice — it grows as we keep choosing to believe in daily life. Every time we respond to God in faith, He strengthens our faith — from faith to faith. To lift up the shield of faith means to walk in God’s promises, not relying on our own strength, but on His faithfulness, the truth of His Word, and the certainty of His promises.
Let us look to those who have gone before us in faith. Job, in the midst of suffering, raised his shield of faith against the fiery darts of the enemy: “You are foolish! Why still hold fast to your integrity? Where is your God? If He is just, why would He allow this? Curse God and die.” (伯13:15 KJV)But Job still declared, “Though He slay me, yet will I trust in Him.” Our Lord Jesus, both in the wilderness and on the cross, resisted the devil again and again with the words, “It is written.” He used God’s Word as His shield and the Father’s love as His foundation, leaving us the perfect example. And the “great cloud of witnesses” also testifies that faith is the foundation of victory. By faith, we do not live by what we see or hear; by faith, we fear God more than man; by faith, we see that God’s reward is real.
When God leads us into the arena of faith, fixing our eyes on Jesus enables us to see suffering as light and momentary, and to proclaim, “Nothing can separate me from the love of Christ.” Faith empowers us to take up our cross, deny ourselves, and follow in obedience. Each time we resist the enemy’s arrows and choose to trust, God strengthens us with His victory, making our faith mature. The brothers overcame Satan by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony — this is where the power of the shield of faith comes from.
Lord, thank You for giving me the shield of faith, that I may stand firm in the spiritual battle. When the fiery darts of doubt, fear, or accusation come, remind me to lift up my faith, believing that Your Word is truer than my circumstances. When I don’t understand, help me to trust Your faithfulness; when I am weak, strengthen my heart to rely on Your grace. Lord, teach me to use Your Word to resist the lies of the enemy, and let my faith be the shield that guards my heart, soul, and body. May I praise You in the storm and give thanks in pain — not living by feelings or by sight, but by Your Word and promises. Holy Spirit, train me in every trial to fight with gratitude and faith, to extinguish all the fiery darts of the evil one, and to bring glory to Your name.
