When Paul wrote these words, he was sitting in a Roman prison, unsure whether he would live or die. Yet even in that place of suffering, he saw God’s good purpose — that his chains had actually helped the gospel spread (Philippians 1:12–14). Because of this, he rejoiced and wrote to encourage the believers in Philippi. His deepest desire wasn’t to be set free, to live comfortably, or even to have a successful ministry, but that the name of Christ would be proclaimed and honoured. If he kept on living, it meant Christ was living through him, carrying on the work God had entrusted to him; and if he died, he’d be with the Lord — far better by comparison. In either case, whether he lived or died, Paul’s one aim was for Christ to be lifted up and clearly seen through his life.
These weren’t just bold words; they were the reality of his life. He had come to see what his life was truly about — counting everything else as loss compared with knowing Christ as his greatest treasure. Since the day he met the risen Lord in that blazing light, was forgiven, and called into His service, Paul stopped living for himself. He poured out his life without hesitation, living out the life of Christ, witnessing and declaring the power of the gospel. His hope rested on God’s promise and the eternal prize found in Christ (Philippians 3:14). His deep love for Christ and his unwavering trust in God’s promises made him fearless about life or death, boldly determined that Jesus would always be magnified through him.
Lord, when I chase the wrong goals — longing for comfort, caring too much about my own success or reputation, afraid, ashamed, uncertain — You still haven’t given up on me. Thank You for placing people like Paul as examples before me: those who hold nothing back, who pour out their lives completely, whose hearts remain steadfast through every hardship, trial, or loss — all for the sake of knowing Christ and seeing Your Kingdom come.
Lord, may I follow the example of Paul and all those faithful ones — not ashamed of my circumstances, nor afraid of testing. Let my one desire be that You are seen in me. Keep me from shrinking back because of what others might think, or hiding Your glory because of my weakness. In good times and in hard times, may Christ always be exalted in me, that my life would shine as a testimony to Your glory. Lord, teach me to stay humble in blessing, steadfast in trial, unashamed before people, and honest before You. Give me courage in all things — in life or in death — for one purpose only: that Christ may be magnified in me.
