Paul writes in Romans 7:18, “For I have the desire to do what is good, but I can’t carry it out.”——这是一个想讨神喜悦,却仍受罪性辖制的信徒的光景。能救我们脱离这困境的,正是那位在我们心里“运行”的神!This describes a believer who truly wants to please God yet still feels the pull of the sinful nature. The One who can rescue us from this struggle is God Himself—the One who is at work in our hearts! The original meaning of “at work” carries the sense of continual and powerful action. God doesn’t just move us once in a while—He keeps on working within us so that we may not only want to do good but also be able to do it.
So when we find ourselves lacking the will or the strength to act, does it mean God has stopped working? Not at all. His work in us never stops—but He doesn’t force us either. It isn’t that God has withdrawn; rather, we’ve given in to the desires of the flesh, quenched the Spirit’s prompting, and resisted His leading. If we keep ignoring the Spirit’s voice and resisting the truth, our hearts grow dull, hardened, and numb. Paul—and countless believers after him—knew that by our own resolve and effort we can never live out God’s will. Only God’s mighty power at work within us can accomplish His good purpose.
Paul made it his aim to please God (2 Corinthians 5:9). He lived for the gospel, counting his life as nothing, considering all else as rubbish compared to knowing Christ, and pressing on toward the goal. God’s faithful servants through the ages have done the same—through His power working in them, they gave their lives completely, labouring with all His energy (Colossians 1:29), living lives that shone with purpose, fulfilling God’s good plan for them.
Lord, how many times have I felt the Holy Spirit stir my heart, resolving to stop wasting time on games or endless scrolling, yet I fall again and again—caught in weakness and struggle—like a dog returning to its vomit or a pig going back to the mud. Slowly my heart grows weary, believing I’ll never break free from certain sins. Lord, if not for Your mercy, I would have already given up. Thank You for Your Word, which reminds me that both “to will” and “to act” come from Your power working within me—for You have never stopped working!
Lord, forgive me for trying to live by my own effort and falling again into weakness. 感谢神,靠着我们的主耶稣基督就能脱离了,因为赐圣灵生命的律在耶稣基督里释放了我,使我脱离罪和死的律了…Paul cried out, “Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God—through Jesus Christ our Lord! For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set me free from the law of sin and death.” Lord, forgive me for forgetting the grace You accomplished on the cross—that through the Holy Spirit who lives in me, and by faith, Your power to overcome sin may be released within me. Teach me not only to desire but to live in victory—to walk in the new life You’ve given me in every part of my being.
Lord, You can do all things, yet You invite us to share in Your purpose through faith and obedience. Thank You for letting me taste failure in my own strength so I could learn to depend fully on You. Holy Spirit, cleanse my heart again. Help me set my mind to deal with the sins I know but have ignored. Strengthen me to follow Your power working in me—to overcome selfishness, indifference, unbelief, and rebellion—so that I may live out the life of Jesus and fulfil Your good and beautiful purpose for my life.
