When Paul beheld the surpassing worth of Christ, he realised that everything he once pursued—his birthright, accomplishments, theology, and religious standing—faded into insignificance before Christ and even became hindrances.
To count all things as loss does not mean we cease working or learning, but that we cast aside every idol of the old self—those things we believe will secure our worth or make us lovable once we attain them.
We often think, “If only I reach that goal… if only I receive recognition… if only I gain that position… if only I serve in that particular way… then I will be fulfilled.” Yet these quietly take the place of Jesus in our hearts. These are the hidden barriers that hinder our growth in life. At their core lies an unmet longing for love—a desire to fill the emptiness of the heart with outward things.
Lord, open my eyes as You opened Paul’s, that I may see that You alone are the supreme treasure—the only One who truly satisfies my soul. May we deeply experience this truth: when we have Jesus, the longings of our hearts are at last fulfilled; when we gain Him, we gain all things. Like a bride who has found her bridegroom, we have no further want.
