The master–servant (or slave) system of Paul’s day is rare in modern society, but the principle he taught—serving faithfully under authority with the fear of the Lord—still applies completely today.
Joseph, Esther, and Daniel all lived under pagan rulers, serving kings who worshipped idols and were often harsh, unpredictable, and volatile. They were surrounded by immense power and worked in environments filled with competition, jealousy, and schemes.
Yet they never judged whether their masters were fair, just, or deserving—because it is God who judges people. They did not try to escape or change their situation but believed that the identity, role, and authority of their masters came from God’s arrangement. They understood deeply that obeying their masters was actually serving God and fearing Him, seeking His approval. They pursued excellence and integrity in their duties, living in such a way that no accusation could stand—bearing a testimony that honoured God and blessed others.
Lord, thank You for placing these examples before me. Please remind me again and again that my work is done for You. Forgive me for slipping into “eye-service”—working hard only when others are watching, completing tasks just to get them done, wanting to be seen or praised, and caring too much about people’s opinions; yet when alone or unsupervised, letting my attitude and quality drop.
Please reshape my thinking and renew the motivation behind everything I do. Human praise, recognition, and status carry no weight in eternity; what matters to You is my heart and my intention. May the fear of God, and love for You and for people, become the driving force in my work. Make me like Joseph or Daniel—in the church and in the workplace—living out my calling, working wholeheartedly for You, my true Master, and bringing glory to Your name.
