These two verses link together three things that are crucial in the Christian life, yet so easily overlooked: prayer, gratitude, and intercession for the gospel. Paul doesnt say, “pray when there’s a need,” but “devote yourselves to prayer.” This reminds me that prayer is essential to walking continually with God. We don’t rely on enthusiasm, busyness, or fixing problems, but on prayer—like branches abiding in the vine—receiving the life and strength needed for both living and serving.

Prayer is spiritual warfare. Being “watchful and thankful” reminds me to stay alert to whats happening in my heart, to reject lies, impatience, and negative emotions, and not be led off course by the enemy. Because I trust that even what seems bad to people carries God’s good purpose, I stop focusing on circumstances and difficulties. Instead, I count God’s grace, trust His promises and power, and pray and contend with hope.

Praying for open doors for the gospel is the prayer of a mature believer—God-centred rather than self-centred. What touches me most is that while Paul was in chains, he didnt ask God to release him quickly. Even as an apostle greatly used by God, he humbly asked the church to pray, “that God may open a door for the message.” This makes me reflect: when I pray, am I more concerned about my own needs, or about the advance of God’s kingdom? Lord, I want to rise up and go with You.

Lord, when Your kingdom is being renewed, there is a great need for workers. Please forgive me for relying on my own strength and being busy with activity. Thank You for teaching me again to persevere in prayer—to draw grace and strength from You, to win the inner battle, to be freed from self-centredness, to have the mind of Christ, to work alongside You, and to contend with Satan for souls. Lord, what You have promised You are fully able to accomplish. Please keep opening doors for the gospel. May the Holy Spirit work in peoples hearts, so they come to know Christs salvation, receive healing by faith, experience freedom and release,使万国万民都归神的国度,见证福音的大能! and so that people of every nation may return to Your kingdom, bearing witness to the power of the gospel.
