In Paul’s day, Roman culture was incredibly indulgent when it came to sex. Chastity and purity weren’t considered virtues—they were seen as constraints. It was completely normal for men to have not just a wife, but also mistresses and visit prostitutes. That was just how society operated. Thessalonica was a busy port city shaped by Greek and Roman influence. It was full of idol worship and loose morals, and that’s exactly the context the church was planted in.
Paul recognised that God had already started leading the believers in Thessalonica down the path of holiness, and he urged them to keep going in that direction. He warned them clearly to stay away from sexual sin—being set apart from that lifestyle is God’s will, and it’s what brings Him delight. If believers slip back into living like the world, following the same old urges and crossing the boundaries God has set, they end up wronging their brothers—just like King David wronged Uriah.
To reject this call to holiness isn’t just ignoring human advice, it’s rejecting the very God who gives His Holy Spirit. This is a command passed on through the apostles from the Lord Jesus Himself.
Lord Jesus, thank You for speaking truth into a world full of sexual confusion and compromise. You’ve made it clear what Your will is—to turn away from sexual immorality and walk in holiness. I might respond like the rich young man and say, “I’ve kept all these things.” But when I see the way non-believers live, am I envious of their so-called “freedom”? Do I find myself drawn to it? Or am I secretly judging them in my heart?
Both envy and judgment show there’s still work to be done in my heart—I still need Your light and cleansing.
God, please help me. I’m Your child, and I want to live holy. Following Jesus and living a life without sin is the goal I’m chasing. I want to respond to Your call to holiness now, preparing for the day when I’ll receive my inheritance in Your Kingdom and enjoy the beauty of Your presence forever.
