The church in Thessalonica was facing many difficulties at the time. Some, through a misunderstanding of the truth about the Lord’s return, had ceased to work properly. They became idle, yet continued to expect support from the church, and even disrupted and unsettled other brothers and sisters (2 Thessalonians 3:6–12). This made it easy for those who were faithful in service and diligent in doing good to grow weary and discouraged: their efforts went unacknowledged, their admonitions were not received, and instead they were dragged down and misunderstood.
In such circumstances, the most natural human response is to withdraw love and stop giving, thinking, “Enough—I will no longer be involved.” Yet Paul responds with a gentle but firm exhortation: “Do not grow weary in doing good.” Do not allow the weakness or failure of others to cause you to turn aside from the way of Christ. The disobedience of others must never become a reason for us to abandon doing good.
The foundation of this exhortation is found in Jesus Christ Himself. Throughout His life, the Lord Jesus went about doing good, yet He was repeatedly rejected, misunderstood, and slandered. He did not draw back, nor did He cease to love because of human indifference. Instead, He submitted to the will of the Father and walked the path to the cross, accomplishing salvation through love.
Paul himself was a witness to this way. When he was persecuted, misunderstood, and rejected, he still chose to love others, to serve them, and to pray for them. He understood that once the heart grows weary and discouraged, a person can easily shift from relying on the Holy Spirit to acting according to the flesh, responding to hurt with coldness or bitterness. In doing so, one not only loses their witness, but also slowly drifts away from God in their inner life.
Lord, teach us that we do good not in order to receive something in return, and that we love others not in order to be affirmed, but because You first loved us. Uphold us by Your love, so that we may not grow cold because of the weakness of others, nor abandon what is good because of the hardships we face. May we follow closely in Your footsteps, and by the strength You supply, persevere without growing weary or losing heart in doing good—until the day You return, when we stand before You and receive the commendation and reward that come from You alone.
