David was someone who lived through constant hardship and deep suffering. When he was young and hunted by Saul, he hid in the wilderness, in caves, and in foreign lands, facing danger from every direction, always at risk of betrayal or death. His life was unstable—one wrong move and it could all be over. He had no inheritance and no visible signs of blessing. David was like a stray dog, hiding in a cave while running for his life. He was human like us—he cried, he was afraid, he grieved, and he was weak.

Yet he was not shaken by his circumstances or his enemies. Why? Because he was fully convinced that Gods promise to make him king would not fail. He believed that every season of his life came from God, that everything flowed from Gods faithful and good purposes, and that God was shaping him with the heart and character of a king. When he said, “The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely my inheritance is beautiful,” he already believed it deeply, even though the promise had not yet been fulfilled.

The key was this: in every hardship, David learned one spiritual discipline—to continually set the Lord before him. He did not think of You only when things were going well, nor did he turn to You only when he had no way out. He made a deliberate, ongoing choice to set You before him.

This speaks strongly to me. In everyday life, what do I place before my eyes? I often place my problems in front of me, and the more I look at them, the more anxious I become. I place other peoples opinions in front of me, and the more I dwell on them, the more hurt and wronged I feel. I place the possible consequences of failure in front of me, and before I even act, I pull back. When these things fill my vision, my heart is easily shaken.

David, however, chose to set the Lord continually before him. This meant that when crisis came, he saw not the enemys sword first, but Your throne; he listened not to rumours, but to Your promises. When his focus shifted, something powerful happened—you stood at his right hand. In the ancient world, the right hand was the place of protection, strength, and support.

Lord, thank You. Teach me to follow Davids example and to intentionally train myself to place You before every thought and every decision. Let me experience this reality too: when I set You before me, You stand at my right hand. You are with me, You support me, and You face every challenge and battle alongside me. Even when circumstances are unstable and enemies are bold, my heart becomes steady. Because You are at my right hand, Youare not only my strength and shield—you are my constant victory.

Lord, forgive me for so often stepping ahead of You, trying to take control and handle everything myself. Train me so that whenever anxiety begins to rise, I immediately practise this one thing: setting You before me. When You are here, I have peace; when You reign, I will not be shaken. May this practice of continually setting You before me become an unshakeable foundation in my life.

May all of us who learn to live this way experience it on earth: even if the earth gives way, even if the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, even if the waters roar and the mountains tremble, we will not fear. We will trust in the Lord and remain unshaken. And in the end, in heaven, we will receive blessing and be with You forever.
