This is David’s life testimony after the Lord delivered him from Saul and from his enemies. Years of being hunted and surrounded made him feel as though he had fallen into raging “great waters,” entangled by the cords of death and overwhelmed by the destruction of the wicked, his heart almost drowning in despair. Yet it was exactly in those moments—when death seemed certain—that he experienced God’s mighty rescue.

David came to share a “life-and-death bond” with God. He knew deeply that deliverance does not come from human experience, ability, or careful planning, but from God’s gracious hands that never fail. When I face crisis, injustice, or pressure and feel as though suffocating waters are closing in, my instinct is always to struggle hard to save myself—to grab at anything that looks like a lifeline and try to get out by my own strength. But this verse reminds me that only God can save us, and He surely will. When the floods rise, the Lord still sits as King. No matter how dangerous the situation or how out of control things appear, God’s throne has never been shaken, and His saving work has never stopped.

When we were overwhelmed by the flood of sin and death, Jesus Himself came down from heaven and entered this broken world. On the cross, He was submerged and rejected for us, experienced death, and then rose again, lifting His people out of the great waters time and time again.

As I look back on my own life—whether facing tests of faith or falling because of my own sin—so many times fear, discouragement, and despair rose up. Yet whenever I repented and cried out, it was God’s grace that stepped in to save me, reaching out again and again to hold me so that I would not sink into destruction. Your hand was not watching from the shore, but actively reaching into the cold, chaotic “waters,” firmly taking hold of me and stepping into my life when I was most helpless.

Lord, forgive me for so often fixing my eyes on the wind and the waves and forgetting to look up at the hand reaching toward me. Teach me to stop struggling in vain and instead respond willingly and humbly, allowing myself to be “caught” by You. Lord, teach me to trust Your goodness in the storm, to call on You, to cling tightly to Your promises in times of crisis—not relying on my own understanding, but trusting You fully and acknowledging You. You will surely reach out and pull me from deep waters and rescue me from the raging fire.

Lord, You have risen in victory and You reign over all things forever. Revive Your church, that we may humbly admit that without Your intervention we cannot stand, and believe that the same hand that lifted David and Peter will today likewise take hold of every humble heart that looks to You. As we cry out according to Your will, stretch out Your hand from heaven and show Your mighty power—heal broken hearts and save the lost. Use us, who have been rescued by You, to bear witness to those still in deep waters, to lead them back to You, that they may receive true life and eternal hope, so that all nations may praise Your mercy and salvation forever.
