During more than a decade of life on the run, David was surrounded by hardship and danger, facing countless moments when his life hung by a thread. He must have heard endless advice and many different voices. Yet in the passing of time, those voices proved to be like grass and straw, carried away by the wind. Only the word of God stood firm—like pure gold refined in the fire, without impurity, able to endure the harshest testing. After being delivered from the hand of enemies far stronger than himself, and after a deliverance that felt like being brought back from death, David declared with deep conviction: “As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless.”

What does it mean to “take refuge in him”? David’s whole life gives us the answer: to take refuge in God is to place our trust in his word. When the enemy’s arrows are flying, when injustice comes upon us, our natural instinct is to strike back, to defend ourselves by our own means. But David chose instead to hide himself in the word of God, making God’s word his only refuge.

When I face crisis, my instinctive first reaction is to judge it as bad straight away, to move immediately to fix it, resist it, push it away, reject it, and protect myself—trying to minimise the loss as much as possible. I believe David shared the same flesh as we do; as natural people in difficult circumstances, our first responses are often the same.

But I thank you for the way you trained David. Through countless acts of discipline and repeated practice, you led him out of fear and out of his instinct for self-protection, teaching him instead to turn to you in the midst of his circumstances—to take refuge in your word, to pray, and to seek you. And as David learned to practise this, you truly stood between him and his enemies. This was not a theory he taught, but a reality he encountered again and again in the most desperate situations. He discovered that as long as he kept your word, you became his shield. Just as your word declared, so your protection came—fully and without compromise. And so taking refuge in your word became the governing law of David’s life.

Lord, I thank you for every circumstance you allow in my life, even the uncomfortable ones. Through them you show me my instinctive need to protect myself—the strong, entrenched self-defence mechanisms within me, like walls of bronze and iron, seeking to enclose me in situations I cannot break through. Lord, I ask that you would heal me and set me free from this lack of freedom. Train me also, as you trained David, to learn to turn to you in every circumstance—not to give in to the discomfort within me, to restrain the impulse to judge what is good or bad, and to resist the desire to act according to my own will.

我愿意在环境里、心里最难受的时候,停下我心中的“抵抗”,转向你,求圣灵把你的话语释放在我里面,带领我去经历:你的话没有一句不带着能力,你的话就是灵,就是生命!I am willing, in the midst of my circumstances—when my heart feels most distressed—to stop the resistance within me and turn to you. I ask the Holy Spirit to release your word within me and lead me to experience this truth: not one of your words is without power; your words are spirit and they are life. As I take refuge in your word, you become not only the shield before me, extinguishing every flaming arrow of the evil one, but you also bring healing power—to quiet my panic, to soften my resistance, and to set me free. Through your word you give birth within me to a peace and a freedom that come from heaven, and your word becomes the governing law of my life.
