In this psalm, David looks back and sees the whole journey of how God led him to grow. God rescued him from his natural instinct to “run away” and “hide,” and trained him to break free from panic, fear, and the threat of death closing in on him. God taught him, in times of danger, to deliberately set the Lord before him, to take refuge by hiding in God’s word, to use God as his shield and escape the enemy’s fiery arrows; to bring God’s saving power through praise; and to train his hands for battle, strengthening his arms and continually strengthening his inner life.
In this verse, a completely new David steps forward—he actually turns around and begins to pursue his enemies, and will not stop until the task is finished. This change is not driven by human impulse or bravado, but flows from his experience of God “reaching down from on high and taking hold of him” (v.16), his experience that “the word of God is refined” (v.30), and that “God made his path wide and secure” (v.36). David’s life is transformed from the inside out. He comes to understand that God is not only his shield who protects him, but also his strength, empowering him to take the initiative, defeat the enemy, fight courageously for God’s kingdom, and expand God’s kingdom and inheritance.
Lord, You have also rescued me from sin and death, and in Your gentle and faithful love You have healed and set me free, allowing me to grow step by step. Yet in my life there are still fear, pride, shame, disobedience, coldness, love for the world, self-protection habits, and the negative fiery arrows shot by Satan. These spiritual “enemies” often rise up and attack me again.
Through David, You remind me that in Your salvation, You do not only save me and act as my shield, training me to take refuge in Your word to avoid the enemy, but You also heal me and raise me up—turning me from passive to active, from defeat to victory, so that I may take possession of the land You have given me.
Lord, thank You for defeating Satan’s kingdom on the cross for me, overcoming the power of death and the grave, plundering the enemy, and giving me Your kingdom, allowing me to have a share in it, so that my life on earth has direction and hope. Because of Your past deliverance and preservation of my life, and because of Your calling and choosing of me, I now rise to take up my cross—this powerful weapon that has already overcome the enemy—and pursue my “enemies,” overtake them, and drive them out of my life completely.
Lord Jesus, who gives me strength, I love You. Please sustain me, so that because of the victory of Your cross, I may walk the way of the cross, rely on the power of the cross, die to sin, overcome the power of sin, and live in freedom. May I also help those who, like me, are controlled by sin—this “enemy”—to fight against it. Remember that we are called by Your name, and raise us up to become warriors, giving ourselves fully and fighting with all our strength for Your kingdom.
