David, throughout his life, passed through the depths of affliction and the cords of death that entangled him. Through these trials he perceived that God’s good purpose was to train him by means of his circumstances, that he might know Him more deeply. As the Lord Jesus said, to know the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom He has sent, is eternal life. Drawn up out of the despair of the mighty waters, David came into a surpassing knowledge of God’s statutes and His nature: that the LORD is the living God. This became his assurance of entering into rest, and the worship that flowed forth from the depths of his heart.
O Lord, You have shown me that the living God is not swayed by circumstances, nor is He governed by my will. Though David was but flesh and blood, he grew anxious in the face of danger. When he found no way out, he chose to cry out to You with all his strength. Yet after passing through these things, he came to see that the end of all matters is determined by You. It does not depend on man’s striving, but on Your sovereign purpose. David came to a deeper knowing: that all things may be shaken, but God alone is the Rock who never changes. And the best he could do was to return to his rightful place—to yield, to watch, and to take refuge in Your word; to let his heart be quieted into rest, and to wait for Your salvation.
As I look back upon my life, though my heart was often consumed by what my eyes saw and my ears heard—quick to grow proud, to reckon the evil of others, and to become restless within—so that in many tests I ended in failure, yet it was good for me to suffer. You had long known my path; You “tailor-made” all things for me. When I thought I was shut up in darkness, with no way of escape, only after passing through did I marvel and confess: Your lovingkindness is better than life. I thank You that You, the true and living God, dwell within me—accompanying me, training me, and renewing my mind. All my afflictions were not laid upon me by others, but arose from my own sin. I thank You for leading me to confession and repentance, and for setting my heart to deny myself and exalt Christ. When I take up the cross, You strengthen me from within, causing me to know in truth Your abiding presence. Therefore I cannot but praise You: You are the living God, my Rock. He who does Your will shall never be shaken.
(诗18:37)O Lord, I thank You for this precious salvation. You have taught me that this spiritual path is not only a matter of crying out to be delivered from the enemy, nor of passively enduring his assaults and temptations. Rather, it is to follow the example of David, who by the Lord fought actively, declaring: “I pursued my enemies and overtook them; I did not turn back till they were destroyed.” May You, the Living Rock, be my constant refuge, causing my spirit to rise up—no longer a slave to sin, but one who faces the enemy and utterly defeats him. Let all who see bear witness: that a weak man, because You are the trustworthy and living God, has overcome—and they too will come to praise You.
