David begins by lifting his eyes to behold God’s creative beauty in nature: the heavens declare the glory of God and proclaim the power of the Creator. He then turns to meditate on the perfection and truth of the law of the Lord, whose worth is far greater than pure gold. Whether in the work of creation or in the revelation of His word, God’s glory and holiness are displayed everywhere, leading people step by step to return to Him and to know Him. Having glimpsed God’s holiness, David is moved to humble self-examination. He lays bare his heart before the Lord and offers a sincere prayer of confession.

Prayer and the word of God are inseparable. Because David feared and longed for the word of the Lord, it was through that very word that he came to see his own corruption—sin not only in outward transgressions, but also in hidden faults, the evils concealed deep within the heart, stirring and ready to spring up and grow whenever given the opportunity. The deceitfulness and sinfulness of the human heart are like a great deep, far beyond one’s own reason or understanding. As it is written: “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” (Jer. 17:9). And again, “Who can say, ‘I have kept my heart pure; I am clean and without sin’?” (Prov. 20:9). It was in such light that David cried out to God for forgiveness and deliverance. To know God and to know oneself—this is indeed the greatest wisdom in life.

O Lord, you alone search the deepest places of my heart—my motives, my thoughts, and my hidden desires. Even the smallest and most concealed intentions lie bare and uncovered before you. Whenever I pray and ask you to reveal my sin, your light comes promptly, making me understand that you have never regarded outward cleverness or ability; what you care about is the attitude and motive of the heart.

Even when I do not yet understand, I am willing not to trust my own feelings or judgments, but to believe that this is your moment—through people and situations—to deny the self and to lead me to lay myself down. It is a precious opportunity for me to recognise the hidden bitterness, pride, and self-righteousness within me. Teach me no longer to place confidence in my own assessments—those thoughts I assume to be right or good—but, by the Holy Spirit within, to separate the new self you have given me, which is willing to do good, from the hidden motives of the old self. So may I submit to the truth and live before you with a pure heart.

O Lord, you are altogether holy. If I am to remain in close fellowship with you, then like David I must daily take your word as my guide and willingly invite you to search my whole being. I long to become a vessel for noble purposes in your house; therefore I would cleanse myself day by day and turn away from all that is ignoble. I open every corner of my life to you—asking you to cleanse, to fill, and to rule—so that I may become a dwelling place for your glory and honour your name all my days.
