【Psalm 19:13Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me. Then I will be blameless, innocent of great transgression.

This verse spoken by David exposes the root of humanity’s original sin: Satan’s fall began with “I will exalt my throne and make myself like God,” and he planted this rebellious, pride-driven urge to overstep one’s place and replace God deep within the human heart.

Only Jesus truly understood that it is only through “not my will, but the Father’s will” — obedience even unto death — that Satan’s power of wilful self-assertion within us could be defeated.

When faced with Nabal’s provocation, and Saul in the cave, had David acted according to his fleshly impulses, the outcome would have been irreversible failure, with consequences both terrifying and devastating. David knew that it was God who intervened through the circumstances, restraining him at the critical moment. It was only in the matter of Bathsheba that David followed his own desires and will, and this eventually brought immense disaster and pain upon his entire family, opening the door to the enemy and allowing sin to gain control over him and his descendants. David came to understand what wilful wrongdoing truly meant. He recognised his own weakness and learned that only by humbly returning to his proper place, and by continually acknowledging his need for God’s guidance and restraint, could he stand.

If this was true even for David, how much more does the Lord teach us to pray that God would not lead us into temptation. Sin often begins by yielding to desires that go unnoticed or seem insignificant. An unchecked emotion can slowly take hold of our will and eventually dominate our lives. I have suffered greatly from yielding to sin, and this has taught me not to treat even the smallest compromise lightly. God’s word is light; I want to keep His word in my heart, allowing it to warn me and search my thoughts (v.11). I believe that the God who restrained and preserved David will also preserve me.

Lord, the Spring Festival has arrived. In these days filled with worldly noise, temptation, and testing, please help me remain alert amid material comparison and competition. Guard my tongue and my emotions in the tensions and offences that arise among family and friends, so that I am not driven by the proud will that insists on “doing everything my way.” May the Holy Spirit release His power to remind me in every situation, using people or circumstances to restrain and correct me, so that I do not commit wilful sin. When I feel distressed, help me to seek Your will, to nail my selfish “I want” to the cross, and to submit to the Spirit’s leading. Teach me to pray often, meditate on Your word, and abide in You. May I, during this festive season, find joy in fearing You, take David as my example, and learn step by step, through real circumstances, how to become a person after Your own heart.
