From the time he was anointed as a young man to the fulfilment of God’s promise, David went through countless dangers, hardship, and humiliation over many years. Yet here he is full of joy, counting how God answered his prayers, gave him blessing and long life, and placed a crown of fine gold and honour upon him. Did he forget the suffering he had been through? No. In those trials David saw only the steadfast love of God. He understood that from killing the lion and the bear as a shepherd to fleeing from Saul in distress, every hardship was training carefully prepared by God for him.
Lord, through this passage You show that whether a person lives in joy, gratitude, and victory is not determined by circumstances themselves, but by whether he is willing to turn from negative ways of thinking. Yielding to negative thoughts is the law of sin in the old self, drawing a person toward discouragement and despair. God knows our sinful nature: unbelief, complaining, bitterness, resentment, judgment, hatred… these are refined and removed through suffering. All who truly know God—from Moses, Jacob, and Joseph to the twelve apostles in the New Testament—had to suffer; even the Son of God, Jesus, had to drink the “cup” given by the Father.
Yet those who walk with God can, through life’s hardships, see and experience His love and understand His good, pleasing, and perfect will: suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope; and hope does not put to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit given to us. (Romans 5:3–5) And this light and momentary affliction is achieving for us an eternal weight of glory that far outweighs them all. (2 Corinthians 4:17) In His steadfast love, God uses suffering to bring victory and to grant the crown that belongs to eternity.
David understood this. In line with God’s promise, he was being shaped through hardship to become king. That is why he did not say, “I trust in the LORD,” but “The king trusts in the LORD.” This was God’s love and goodness toward him; suffering was not for destruction but for fulfilment. Looking back, he saw only the grace God had shown him along the way. His inner life was filled with trust, joy, and strength. The eyes of his heart were opened to see that God’s steadfast love will never be shaken.
Lord, forgive me. At times I let negative thoughts in, allowing them to rob my faith and hope, wasting time in unhelpful inner struggle, sinning against God and hurting myself. God, I turn to You now and rely on You. I am willing to work with You and take responsibility, guarding the door of my heart and refusing every negative thought. (罗5:17) When I feel troubled or disappointed, may I follow David’s example—trusting in Your good purpose and believing that through these hardships You are shaping me, pouring out grace upon my life, granting righteousness, and leading me along the way of Jesus Christ—the way of the cross—so that the righteousness of Christ and a thankful spirit may reign in my life. (Romans 5:17)
Help me to trust You in everyday life and to meditate on Your good works according to the truth, so that all I see is Your unshakable love. Fill my heart with thanksgiving and praise, and enable me to live out the joy that befits a child of God.
