Since our forefather Adam ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, mankind has come to judge all things merely by right and wrong, paying no heed to the inward response of the heart. Love, mercy, righteousness, and holiness were lost, and man became separated from God. The communion and fellowship of the human spirit with Him were cut off, and the spirit of man fell into a deep and prolonged slumber toward God.
David was no exception, until the choosing of God came upon him, awakening his soul and bringing him alive toward God. As the anointed one, David was set under the Name of the Lord; his words and deeds concerned the glory of God. Therefore, for His own Name’s sake, God led David in the paths of righteousness—beyond mere right and wrong, beyond good and evil.
This path was fully revealed when David was pursued by Saul. In the eyes of men, David fought for his nation’s enemies yet was repaid with jealousy; he served faithfully yet was hunted. David was in the right, and Saul was in the wrong. If he had acted according to what was merely “right and wrong,” David would have had every reason to take revenge. Yet when the opportunity came to destroy Saul, he chose instead, time after time, to spare him.
Who then is righteous? There is no one righteous in all the world except Jesus Christ Himself. God opened David’s understanding so that he no longer regarded matters by their outward rightness or wrongness. Instead, within his circumstances—when falsely accused, mistreated, and persecuted—he examined the response of his own heart: whether it was of Adam or of Christ. David came to see that the standard of the “paths of righteousness” in God’s sight is far removed from the world’s measure of “right and wrong.” When the whole world wronged Jesus—despising Him, hating Him, and putting Him to death—He chose, in suffering, to forgive. He laid down every right to vindicate or defend Himself and entrusted judgment to the Father. Because of the righteousness of Jesus, we who are sinners have been saved. The path David walked was the very path of righteousness of Jesus Christ. Therefore David was a man after God’s own heart and brought great glory to His Name.
Lord, I thank You for reminding me through this passage. By faith in Jesus, I have received the Holy Spirit; like David, I have been anointed and brought under Your Name. Yet when I face the words and actions of family members and brothers and sisters—when there are faults or offenses—I feel wronged, and I often fall into the pattern of thinking, “He is wrong, and I am right.” In this way I lose righteousness, and my soul grows dull and heavy.
是否在荣耀你的名?”Lord, have mercy on me, and keep my soul ever awake! Whenever conflict arises, let me no longer be entangled with the right or wrong of others, but instead ask myself: “Are the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart walking in the paths of righteousness? Is my heart still in the old self, or does the righteousness of Christ dwell within me? Is Your Name being glorified?” Deliver me from the patterns of thought of the old man. Lead me to lay down my self-assured “rightness” and to choose the self-denying righteousness of Christ. May my life, in every small choice, obey the truth of Christ’s righteousness for Your Name’s sake—praying, warring, and relying on the Holy Spirit to cleanse my heart—until I am filled with Your love and righteousness, and walk all my days in the path that brings glory to You.
