In the New Testament, a man called Jesus “Good Teacher,” and Jesus responded that only God is truly good. He then told the man to sell his possessions and give to the poor. In the world’s thinking, goodness means receiving—having more given to me. Being asked to give, to surrender, hardly seems like goodness. Yet the man did not understand that Jesus’ instruction was itself an act of goodness. Christ’s goodness was not taking something away, but calling him to repentance and leading him into a blessed path. It was to release him from the grip of wealth, to heal his heart, to remove greed and false idols, and to free him from trusting in money, so that he might trust God, become rich in faith, and enter eternal life with an unfading inheritance in heaven.

当大卫跟拔士巴通奸之后,神的良善和正直不是帮大卫遮掩罪过,而是曝光、管教…David declares that God’s goodness and uprightness lead sinners into the right path. After David’s sin with Bathsheba, God’s goodness did not mean covering it up; instead, He exposed it and brought discipline.

David knew the goodness of God. God did not ultimately condemn him or hold his sin against him (verse 7). When David confessed, the prophet Nathan declared, “The LORD has taken away your sin.” Yet God’s justice remained—David and his household still experienced the consequences of that sin, learning its cost. This too was part of God’s instruction in the right way. From his failure David gained wisdom and lived with greater vigilance. In his old age, when the young and beautiful Abishag lay beside him, he did not act immorally. That late-life purity was the fruit of years under God’s good and upright guidance.

How easy it is to stumble in old age. Many who were mightily used by God in their younger years later gave way to unchecked desires, pride, or greed, failing to finish well and forfeiting reward before God. How tragic.

Lord, thank You for revealing Your goodness and uprightness. You understand our sinful nature; as Scripture says, we all like sheep have gone astray, each turning to his own way. Day by day, through the events around us, You work in wisdom—using circumstances, people, hardship, discipline, and grace—to lead us in the right path. You even became flesh, taking on human form, and lived out before us the way of the cross—the path of self-denial—the only true way, showing us how to walk. Through Your truth You continue to guide and teach us.

God, because of Your goodness and uprightness, despite many failures we are still able to keep walking the path of sanctification. Thank You for Your love and goodness—for unconditional acceptance and patient endurance as You wait for change in us. Thank You for revealing who You are. In response, I choose to release my expectations of others and my insistence that they must change. I will learn to accept them as they are, just as You have accepted me.

Lord, with a humble and repentant heart, I desire to live out Your goodness and uprightness, resting in Your unconditional acceptance. May my life bear witness to Your righteous way and help lead sinners like myself into that path. Not merely in speech, but as David did—through a life that testifies in action.
