David lived a life marked by reverence for God. In every situation, and through the people around him, he observed carefully, sought understanding, and learned to know God. He came not only to recognise God’s character but also to understand the principles by which God works. David knew that those who live according to God’s ways experience His blessing, while those who ignore His ways become spiritually blind—constantly stumbling without understanding why, and often trapped in complaint and bitterness.

When confronted by enemies who spoke kindly yet intended harm, David found himself in great danger, yet he learned a vital lesson: God does not desire that we repay evil with evil. Instead, we are to entrust justice and judgment to Him. David refused to be shaped by the wickedness around him and refused personal revenge. Instead he brought his pain before God and entrusted the matter to God’s justice. He allowed God’s righteousness and mercy to govern his heart first. Through earnest prayer he recognised that God is rich in mercy, giving sinners time and space to repent. Yet he also understood that those who see God’s works yet disregard His ways will eventually face the consequences. God Himself will bring them down and not establish them. This understanding of God’s righteous order lifted David from deep fear and restored his confidence to praise.

Throughout Israel’s history, God’s pattern of mercy and justice stands like a warning mirror. The Israelites saw the Red Sea parted and were led by the pillar of cloud and fire—God’s works were unmistakable. Yet when challenges arose in the wilderness, their instinct was to say, “Let us go back to Egypt.” Although they had witnessed deliverance, they did not learn God’s ways. Their continued rebellion repeated the same failures and provoked God’s righteous judgment, leading to destruction in the wilderness—God did not establish them.

Among David’s opponents, Saul’s story is perhaps the most tragic. Once anointed as king, he began with great promise but failed at decisive moments to recognise what the LORD was doing. He listened more to human praise and the security of his throne than to God. When a person becomes consumed with power, revenge, jealousy, and resentment while ignoring God’s work in history and in life, the end is often downfall. Those who disregard God cannot expect God to establish them.

Lord, Your purpose has never changed. You long for us to truly know You. Through the law, through history, through the prophets, and through countless acts of grace, You continually reveal Your ways to us. Our response to Your works shapes the direction of our lives: those who honour You and pay attention to what You are doing will be strengthened and saved, but those who deliberately ignore or resist Your authority will face righteous judgment.

The deepest purpose of our life on earth is to know You and to grow in spiritual maturity. This calls for intentional attention—day by day, step by step—to Your discipline, Your guidance, Your warnings, and the works of Your hand around us. Lord, may I be someone who truly pays attention, learning to recognise You through what You do and to live according to Your ways. May many more people come to know the one true God and Jesus Christ whom He has sent, be established by God throughout their lives, and enter His kingdom with abundant life.
