This is David’s praise at the dedication of the temple. When we look back upon the journey of David’s faith, that “sackcloth” often weighed heavily upon his heart: 在旷野孤独逃亡的惊恐、在拔示巴事件中惨痛的跌倒、众叛亲离的羞辱、以及丧子之痛的哀哭……the terror of fleeing alone in the wilderness, the grievous fall in the matter of Bathsheba, the shame of betrayal and abandonment, and the bitter weeping over the loss of his child. These sorrows pressed in on every side, as though they would confine him forever in the darkness of night.
Yet in the order of God’s ways, these were but the sorrows of a night. When the light of dawn pierced the darkness, David found that the grace of God was not a mere patch upon a wound, but a complete healing. The Spirit of the Lord, as with sacred oil, wiped away every pain. Even those memories once marked by deep fractures were, in God’s unconditional acceptance, transformed into a testimony of redeeming glory.
This turning of sorrow into joy reached its fullness at the cross. The enemy sought to drag mankind into the depths through war, hatred, slaughter, and the agony of losing loved ones. But Jesus came into the world and, through the sacrifice of His own body and blood, destroyed the hostility that had endured through generations. The peace He accomplished is not a comfort born of emotion, but the Holy Spirit’s complete tearing down of the old life and the glorious rebuilding of the new.
In the world, man has no true hope. When faced with death and the separation from those we love, the only remedy the world offers is to dull the pain or attempt to forget. Yet in Christ this restoration is not psychological. He does not ask us merely to persuade ourselves or to force our hearts to forget. Rather, through His death and resurrection He makes us a new creation. God is the One who overturns and renews life; He removes our sackcloth and anoints us with the oil of joy.
This is the ultimate reality foreshadowed in the book of Book of Revelation:
“Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them… He will wipe every tear from their eyes.” This is not merely a distant promise. Whenever we pass through a night of weeping, if we lift our eyes to the Savior who reigns upon the throne, this eternal comfort comes even now into the land of the living.
Lord, at this very moment, begin Your work in me. Tear down the sackcloth and the long-buried sorrow within my heart. Whether these wounds come from my own sins or from the blows of circumstance, anoint them with the oil of resurrection life. Let me no longer rely on the passing of time to dull my pain, but by the power of the Holy Spirit be truly transformed.
Lord, let me even now, in this present moment—in the land of the living—taste the blessedness of that coming day: in Your glorious dwelling there will be no more death or mourning or pain. May Your presence and Your healing enter my body even now, becoming the strength by which I dance today. Then my soul—the spirit You have given me, Your glory and also my glory—will release power, joy, and strength to praise You without ceasing. O my God, I will give You thanks forever.
