David, along with many people who walk closely with God, discovered that God is faithful, a covenant-keeping God who takes responsibility for His people. He not only cares for our whole life but also holds our past, present, and future in His hands. As the Lord Jesus promised, He has gone to prepare a place for us and will return to receive us to Himself.
David believed that his birth, his family, and even his calling were all appointed by God before the foundation of the world. As Ephesians 1:4–5 teaches, God chose us before the creation of the world and predestined us for adoption as His children. When David saw this clearly, he realised that being rejected, betrayed, abandoned, or chased by Saul were all circumstances allowed by God to shape him with the character required for a king.
“My times” in the original language refers to every season and every moment of life. Lord, thank You. David was not simply saying that his future was in Your hands; he was declaring that every moment of his life was in Your hands. Whether on the mountain or in the valley, in victory or in failure, even those painful moments of brokenness are under the authority of Your powerful hand. You hold not only the outcome but also the process. Every circumstance that challenges or confronts me is something allowed by You, the great Craftsman, to shape and remake my life.
This understanding opened David’s spiritual eyes and lifted him beyond the deep pain of being forgotten and broken. In the Spirit he saw the eternal glory that outweighed present suffering, just as Jesus Christ endured the cross and disregarded its shame because of the joy set before Him.
When I reflect on David, I also see something of my own journey. Since deciding to follow the Lord, trials and misunderstandings seem to have increased. At times it feels like walking on a narrow wire—without relying on You completely, I could fall at any moment. In deep pressure I ask, “Lord, are You there?” When I sense Him saying, “I am here,” peace begins to calm my tears. He even calls me to a higher victory: even when people treat me wrongly, I am to help bring them back from the enemy’s hand, because the good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. I am willing to obey this calling and wait quietly for Him to shape me into such a shepherd.
Lord, thank You. You are not only my Saviour but also the designer of my life. When I face people who oppose me and situations that feel unfair, help me see that these are the very training grounds You are using to form the heart of a good shepherd in me.
Lord, I place myself into Your hands. Remove the fleshly urge in me to escape or defend myself, and give me the heart of a good shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep. Since my life, my breath, and my existence are all in Your hands, and since every hardship in my heart is known to You, I stand open before You—why should I keep striving?
Lord, continue Your work of breaking down and rebuilding my life until the old self is completely shattered and the life of Christ—who laid down His life for the sheep—shines through this broken vessel. May I no longer live for myself. May my whole life follow Your example, loving Your church and caring for Your sheep. It is no longer I who live, but Jesus Christ, the good shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep, living in me.
