When David looked back upon the course of his life, he discerned the goodness and perfection of the Great Shepherd. He came to understand that every sorrow, every trial, and all the affairs of his life were the careful design of God. Having experienced the Lord preparing a table before him in the presence of his enemies, and realizing that God knew all his hardships and afflictions, David’s heart was utterly melted by the lovingkindness of the Lord. He had no response but to love Him. To love God became his only longing after graduating from the “training of the Good Shepherd”; this love enlarged his heart, elevated his life, and lifted him to a higher spiritual realm.
Because of his love for the people of God, David uttered this most earnest exhortation. He knew well that to love the Lord is the greatest safeguard and blessing in life. The Lord preserves the faithful—here, faithfulness is not merely truthfulness in speech, but also steadfastness, loyalty, and covenant-keeping. In David’s life journey, such faithfulness meant remaining loyal when forgotten, refusing to defend himself when wronged, but instead laying himself bare before God, humbly keeping his place, and placing absolute trust in the sovereignty of the Lord.
This “faithfulness” and “love” were most perfectly manifested in Jesus Christ. As it is written in 1 Peter 2:23: “When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate… Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.” God places those who love Him and are faithful among the proud, to refine them, so that through the furnace of suffering they may come to know and to hate pride. The Lord preserves the faithful not by sparing them from suffering, but by keeping them from being consumed in the fiery furnace of the proud.
The mark of the proud is that they have no regard for God; they presume to control all things and trample at will upon what is broken. David encountered many such proud men in his lifetime, yet the phrase “he pays them back in full” reveals the righteous order of God. David understood that judgment belongs to the Lord; he had no need to avenge himself. The lives of Joseph and Moses bear witness to this: by holding fast to humility and faithfulness in trial, when we come forth from the place of being “forgotten,” we see clearly that the proud were but tools in the hand of God. When the carving is finished, the tool is laid aside, but the princely character that has been formed endures forever.
O Lord, I praise You! You are the God who preserves the faithful. I thank You for placing proud people around me, through whom I also see my own pride. O Lord, I praise You! You are the God who preserves the faithful. I thank You for placing proud people around me, through whom I also see my own pride.
O Lord, grant that I may love You and follow You all my life. Teach me not to struggle in grievance, but to be laid bare before You. Continue to shape and carve me until I possess that princely character which can withstand the fire. May I never justify myself, but live out Your humility and faithfulness, bearing witness to You, loving You and glorifying You all my days.
