David once kept silent about his sin, and he experienced the heavy hand of God upon him day and night, so that his spirit was dried up within him. But when he no longer covered his sin, when he chose to confess his weakness and turn back, the heavy burden was lifted. Then he came to understand that the Lord’s instruction does not come only after obedience, but even in his falling, the Lord’s hand of discipline pointed out his wandering path, and with a loving gaze fixed upon him, continued to watch over and guide him. In this we see how a restored “prince” is led again by the Father Himself to walk in the right way.

O Lord, we give you thanks! Your love for us does not end with forgiveness. You do not pardon us and then leave us to go our own way, but you say, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go.” In this “training of a prince,” the hardest lesson is not merely to admit our faults, but to learn again how to walk. For the old nature still lingers, and old ways of thinking seek to rise again. In such times, you know that we need a guide. We thank you that you have promised to be our personal counsellor—not only giving us your general truth, but also providing clear direction according to our present situation.

我承认我的旧人是畜类人,常如“骡马”般顽梗,容易在安逸中走神,在忙乱中迷失……Lord, forgive me, for in my old self I do not like to be instructed or guided, nor do I welcome being watched closely. I confess that in my old nature I am like the beasts, often stubborn like the mule or the horse, easily distracted in comfort and lost in busyness. Yet I thank you, for you have shown me that your “eye upon me” is not merely to see, but to lead with nearness and tenderness. In your instruction, your guidance, and your watchful gaze, there is such a depth of love—so wide and long and high and deep.

Once David fled from you, thinking you were watching his sin; now he loves you and sees that you are watching over his path. Like a father watching a child learning to walk—when the child strays even a little, a glance, a small expression is enough for the child to understand. This is a great intimacy of the Spirit: no need for thunderous rebuke, only a look from the Lord, and the child in love understands at once.

Your counsel is not like human advice; it is founded upon your faithfulness, your sovereignty, and your promises. Lord, as I look back upon the path of my life, I am filled with gratitude. So many times I held tightly to my own plans and grieved your heart, resisting your gentle counsel. Yet you did not urge harshly nor despise my slowness, but patiently instructed and shaped me. You not only forgive, but also train, until you complete the good work. That an old Adam, full of sin, should be renewed, trained, and conformed to the likeness of your Son—this is the greatest work in all creation.

You not only forgive, but also train, until you complete the good work. That an old Adam, full of sin, should be renewed, trained, and conformed to the likeness of your Son—this is the greatest work in all creation.

I am willing to lay myself down and cooperate with you. I trust that you have greater wisdom and vision than I do. Teach me and guide me, that I may see more clearly, walk more steadily, and remain on the path of life you have set before me without turning aside. Fix your eyes upon me and accomplish your work in me, until Christ, your Son, is formed in me, to the glory of your name.
