David, the warrior who had struck down Goliath, was forced to flee and even to act as if he were insane. In that moment of utter humiliation, when his dignity was stripped away and his life was in danger, he did not hide his fear. Instead, he chose to seek the Lord and praise Him. In the light of God, he saw not only the outward danger, but also the pride and concern for honour within his own heart. He submitted himself completely to God, repented with a sorrowful heart for his sin, and resolved to turn away from evil and do what is right. He tasted the goodness of the Lord’s grace: God not only saved his life and dealt with his pride, but also healed his broken heart, shattered under the weight of arrogance.

“A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out.” The Lord does not only draw near to the brokenhearted; He also heals them. As David himself experienced, “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart God will not despise.” Jesus Christ, God incarnate, coming into the midst of sinners, is the fullest expression of this truth: He drew near to the Samaritan woman, touched lepers, and welcomed Peter who denied Him three times. As He said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.”

Lord, when I feel hurt, wronged, or distressed, I often place myself in the position of a victim, sinking into inferiority, self-pity, and resentment. Yet it is Your love that does not give up on me. Your Holy Spirit draws me with love and lifts my eyes to the cross. In the deepest moment of suffering, You did not hold on to a sense of being wronged, but instead prayed for Your enemies: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

Lord, You were grieved because of my sin, yet You willingly laid down Your life for me. The reason I feel wronged and pitiful is because I have exalted myself too highly and set myself up as a judge. Forgive me for still holding illusions about sinners; in our old nature, we are all the same—sinners in need of Your mercy. Let Your light cleanse me more deeply, that I may find healing in forgiveness, learn to hate sin more truly, have compassion on sinners, and become one who comforts those around me. Use me to bring more brokenhearted people to You, that they may find true salvation.
