David often saw the righteous under pressure while the wicked seemed to prosper for a time. He also experienced being misunderstood, looked down on, and let down by others. In the midst of life’s storms, he came to a steady conviction: circumstances can change and what we see can mislead, but God’s faithfulness never changes. So he declared: do not live by feelings, but “trust in the LORD and do good.” This is not about trying harder to be moral, but about living by faith—choosing obedience and surrender even when there is no visible reward and justice seems out of reach.

When a person turns away from the Lord, what appears to be “good” is often just a covering over the sinful nature. David once protected Nabal’s property, yet was repaid with insult. In that moment, anger rose in him and he even considered taking a life. This reflects our own condition: when we are not connected to the Lord and act out of our natural self, doing what we think is “good,” as soon as we are overlooked or misunderstood, bitterness, judgement, and accusation rise within us. Then we see clearly: apart from the Lord, we cannot produce true goodness; what we produce by our own effort ultimately exposes our fallen nature.

Lord, You have not taken us out of this unjust world, but instead use it to expose the old self within us that is quick to judge and slow to forgive. What You desire is that we quickly deny ourselves and repent with humility: “Lord, I have no goodness of my own—be my goodness.” When we stop striving in our own strength and turn to Your promises, Your faithfulness becomes our daily nourishment.

To follow You on the way of the cross means doing good without being treated well, and giving without being understood. Yet You have already made this way for us—you released forgiveness on the cross, were obedient even to death, and rose again in victory. Lord, we are willing to share in the cup You drank, because our hope is not in what this world gives back, but in eternal glory.

Lord Jesus, while I live on this earth, help me not to be controlled by difficult circumstances or to judge things by my own standards, but to rely fully on Your faithfulness as my daily provision. In every moment of offence or unfairness, help me to keep following You through ongoing repentance, and to live out that heavenly life which overcomes the world.
