Psalm 37 reflects David’s understanding in his later years after a lifetime of walking with God. He had gone through Saul’s pursuit, the betrayal of his son, and even his own failure in sin. Through all these situations, he came to recognise human weakness. David’s way was not to hold on in his own strength, but to “roll” his burdens onto God, trusting in His righteousness and power, until he could rest like a weaned child in God’s care. And he truly saw that God fulfilled everything He had promised.
The word “commit” here means “to roll away,” pointing to the act of placing the burdens that weigh us down onto God’s shoulders. “Trust” carries the sense of resting securely. It describes a steady trust in God that does not depend on circumstances. The promise that follows—“He will act”—is certain, yet the way God fulfils it often challenges our expectations.
We need to be careful here: God’s fulfilment does not always match what we think is best, nor does it follow our timing. Often, He first breaks down our false expectations before bringing about His eternal purpose. He is not only interested in solving our problems, but in using them to shape us—cutting away the flesh, refining our motives, and forming the life of Christ within us.
This kind of commitment reached its peak in Gethsemane. When facing the cup, Jesus fully “rolled” everything onto the Father: “Not my will, but Yours be done.” He let go of control and trusted completely. 这“义的代替不义”的破碎,竟成全了人类历史上最伟大的救赎,照着神的旨意——“成了!”Even in the agony of the cross, He did not condemn but prayed for sinners, committing His spirit into the Father’s hands. This act—the righteous for the unrighteous—brought about the greatest redemption in history, according to God’s will—“It is finished.”
This is the path of letting go of our own will and waiting fully for God’s purpose to be fulfilled. When we see the wicked prosper or the righteous suffer and feel unsettled, may the Lord renew our understanding of what He is accomplishing.
Lord, in every situation, help me not to focus only on solving problems or asking whether You will defend me, but to learn true commitment and trust. Even when things do not go as I expect, teach me in the struggle with my own will to value my relationship with You and to let Your nature rule within me. Lord, may You raise up more “little Christs” on the earth, bringing them into Your glory, so that Your will may be fully carried out.
