In his later years, as David reflected on a life full of hardship yet marked by God’s favour, he confirmed a spiritual principle: someone who truly trusts in God will naturally live a life of generosity and mercy.

“To show kindness, to lend, and to give—is this not the nature of God?” Our God sends sunshine and rain on both the righteous and the unrighteous; He is never stingy with His creation. Jesus Christ is even willing to share His Kingdom, authority, and glory with us. When someone abides in God, he abides in love, and lives in grace and generosity. The phrase “all day long” in Scripture shows this is not occasional kindness, but the daily, natural outflow of a life saturated with God’s nature.

David’s life clearly demonstrates this principle. Twice he gave up the chance to kill his enemy Saul, choosing instead to show kindness to the one who was seeking his life. After becoming king, he did not wipe out Saul’s family, but instead welcomed Saul’s disabled grandson Mephibosheth without holding past wrongs against him, restored his inheritance, and gave him a permanent place at his table. At the king’s table, Mephibosheth’s disability was covered by the tablecloth, just as our true state is covered by grace. After the victory at Ziklag, he insisted on sharing the plunder with the exhausted soldiers and the friends who had supported him. He did not keep the grace for himself, because he understood that he was simply a “channel of blessing”—having received abundance from God, he was willing to show kindness and give to others.

Generosity is the training ground of faith. David was able to give without expecting anything in return because he had truly experienced that “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not lack.” His life was genuinely connected to an unending source. This God-centred way of living not only allows a person to experience God’s unfailing provision, but also builds up the most valuable spiritual inheritance for future generations.

God never fails to honour people. He remembers every act of giving David made in faith and poured out the ultimate blessing on David’s descendant—Jesus Christ. Christ brought this generosity to its fullest expression: He gave Himself completely on the cross. His poverty made us rich, and His self-giving accomplished redemption for all humanity.

Lord, thank You for showing me through David that generosity does not come from having abundance, but from abiding in You, the source of all abundance. Please enlarge my heart and teach me to show mercy and to give, receiving others just as You have received me, this “spiritual Mephibosheth.”

Lord, forgive me for often holding on tightly because of insecurity, even falling into the poverty of stinginess. Help me to understand that when I give under the leading of the Holy Spirit, I am not losing, but living in Your nature and drawing from Your endless abundance. Let me experience Your word: “Whoever has will be given more, and he will have abundance.”

Lord Jesus, I choose to become a giver, not a taker. I do not give simply to receive blessings, but I long for my life itself to become a channel through which blessings flow. May Your grace flow through me. As I follow Your nature in giving generously and showing mercy to the poor, may You also bless my descendants according to Your promise, so that people may see Your faithful, loving, covenant-keeping, and never-ending nature.
