Psalm 139 is a deeply honest and surrendered conversation in which David comes face to face with God in the depths of his heart, surrounded by God’s ever-present love. Ever since Adam and Eve sinned, people have been afraid of being “seen through”. Yet surrounded by God’s covenant love, although David is completely known and seen through by this holy God, he responds with reverence but without fear or shame. What we see reflected from the depths of David’s soul is God’s immeasurably deep protection and comfort. Before the God who is all-knowing, ever-present and almighty, he rests in complete reverence and opens his true self fully before Him, holding nothing back.
David says, “You know when I sit and when I rise.” Sitting down, rising, going out and lying down represent every part of our everyday lives. Whether we are around others or on our own, busy or resting, God knows. More than that, God knows every thought within us. The words we have never spoken, our hidden motives and our inner struggles cannot be hidden from God.
This is both comforting and sobering. The comfort is that God knows us completely. When we are misunderstood or carrying deep pain in our hearts, God knows. We do not need to pretend to be strong, and we do not need to prove ourselves. He knows our weaknesses, tears and needs, and still cares for us with love. The sobering truth is that we may appear godly, humble and loving in front of others, while pride, jealousy, bitterness and self-righteousness remain hidden within. People can see only what is on the outside, but God sees our hearts.
God searches us not simply to expose sin, but to lead us away from sin and into His everlasting way. (23-24节)So David finally prays to this God, who is full of goodness and does not condemn us: Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. (v. 23–24 NIV)
As I reflect on this passage, I examine my own heart again: Do I truly believe that He is the all-knowing, ever-present and almighty God? Have I opened myself completely to Him, or are there still parts of my heart that I keep for myself, unwilling to let Him correct and discipline me? When God’s Word exposes my hidden sin, am I quick to defend myself, or do I humbly bow before Him and repent?

Please forgive me for so often caring more about how others see me while overlooking how You see me. Please search my heart and reveal the sin within me and every thought that is displeasing to You. Lord, You know everything about me, yet You do not condemn me; You desire to rescue me from sin, to help me, comfort me, heal me and save me! May I open myself completely to You and fully surrender to You in Your goodness and Your love that does not condemn.
Thank You for shining Your light on my sin and bringing it into the open, not allowing me to keep hiding it, so that I may approach Your throne of grace with confidence and receive forgiveness, cleansing and renewal in Christ. Please give me a humble and repentant heart, so that I no longer cover up my sin as Adam did, but willingly allow Your Word to correct and prune me. Whether I am with others or on my own, may I live with reverence for You, remain open before You, repent, walk in Your light, and live in a way that pleases You!
In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
