Psalm 106 is referring back to Numbers 11. The Israelites were not satisfied with what God had provided; they craved meat and complained against Him. God gave them quail in abundance, but while the meat was still in their mouths, a severe plague came upon them.
They received exactly what they desperately wanted, yet what they thought would satisfy them actually led to death.
They named that place Kibroth Hattaavah—“graves of craving”—because there they buried the people who had given themselves over to their cravings.
The NIV describes this as God sending “a wasting disease upon them,” while other translations say He sent “leanness into their soul.”
The picture is striking: their appetites were satisfied, but their souls became lean.
This gives us a serious spiritual warning.
It is possible to gain what we desperately want and yet become spiritually lean.
Sometimes we assume that if we get what we want, we will be happy.
But Psalm 106 reminds us that getting what we want is not always the same as receiving what is best for us.
We can gain what we want from a worldly point of view while losing what our souls truly need.
Our desires can become idols, taking the place of our trust in God, the Giver of life.
Jesus shows us a better way.
In Gethsemane, He prayed, “Not my will, but yours be done” (Luke 22:42).
True freedom comes when we bring our desires honestly to God and believe that His ways are higher than ours.
His will leads us to healing and wholeness.
When we surrender to Him, we share in our Master’s peace, strength, and joy.
So perhaps we should change our prayers from “Lord, give me what I want” to:「主啊,赐给我能让我更亲近你的事物。 “Lord, give me what will draw me closer to You.
If what I desire is not Your best for me, help me to let it go.
I would rather have a soul that is full of You than a life full of things I wanted.”
祷告Prayer
Lord, forgive me for the times I have wanted something so strongly that my soul became lean, filled with anxiety, anger, disappointment, and even hopelessness, and I trusted myself rather than Your great plan to transform my life. You know my desires, but You also know what is best for my soul.
Teach me to trust Your sovereignty, Your wisdom, Your goodness, and Your timing.
Jesus, teach me to pray as You prayed: “Not my will, but Yours be done.”
Following my own desires apart from You leads me away from life, but Your will leads me into eternal life, peace, and joy.
May my greatest desire be to know You, please You, and walk in Your will. I would rather have less and have a soul that is full of You than have everything I want and become lean in my soul.
Whether You say yes, no, or wait, I can trust You and remain satisfied in You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
