Proverbs gives us God’s wisdom, and right from the beginning it warns us that those who greedily pursue gain are heading down a path that leads to death. Whether they are wicked people who harm others for money, or those who are tempted to follow them, the end is destruction.
“Greed for gain” is not simply about liking money. It is allowing personal gain to gradually become the master of our lives, being ruled by greed and slowly losing the fear of God. Wealth and gain then take God’s place and become an idol that controls our lives.
Jesus said, “No one can serve two masters.” (Matthew 6:24 NIV) We cannot serve both God and Money. 人还能拿什么换生命呢”(太16:26) He also said, “What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Matthew 16:26 NIV)
From ancient times until today, countless people have lost their lives because of greed for wealth and gain. Like moths flying into a flame, even when the danger is obvious, why do people still throw themselves into it? This shows that behind greed there is a deadly trap set by the powers of darkness. Through human greed, the enemy sets all kinds of deadly snares in the world to catch people and drag them towards destruction.
May God search me: Have I truly experienced that “The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want,” so that I now fear God and rely on His provision? Or am I still living out of the orphan mindset of my former life without God—poverty, comparison, and jealousy—and giving in to the hellish power of “never enough, never enough” and greed?
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for using this verse early this morning to warn me once again. As I come before You, please search me and show me whether there is any greed within me—coveting things that are not mine and that God has not given me: money, status, reputation, gifts, beauty, appearance, someone else’s spouse... Help me recognise that greed opens the door to every kind of evil. Once greed takes hold in a person’s heart, the enemy can begin to work and every kind of sin can enter; and the wage of sin is death.
You Holy Spirit, please shine Your light on me and reveal the hidden desires in my heart, so that I deal with them early and do not allow these desires to be enticed, conceived, and give birth to sin, causing me to lose my love for God. Please make You my greatest treasure, and give me a contented, honest and generous heart. Help me faithfully manage and make good use of everything You have entrusted to me according to Your will. Freely I have received; freely may I give, never allowing the things of this world to take Your place in my life. Please help me find true freedom in Christ and live a life that fears You.
In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
