In Psalm 145, David is not simply praising what God has done; he is also declaring what he knows about God’s character. God’s righteousness and love do not change when our circumstances change. We often judge God by whether things turn out the way we expect: when we are blessed, we believe He is loving; when we suffer, we question whether He is righteous. But David reminds us that God’s righteousness is not determined by my circumstances, and His love is not determined by how I feel.
God’s ways are higher than our ways, and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts. How can I presume to know what is truly good or bad? The heavens are so vast and the earth so deep; with the limited view of a frog at the bottom of a well, how could I judge God’s righteousness? God has already revealed His righteousness in Scripture. As His creatures, our part is to fear God, believe His Word, and trust in the righteousness and love He has revealed. Whenever we are corrected and His light exposes what is within us, our first response should be to acknowledge our own sin. He shines His light on us not to condemn us, but to call us to repentance. He wants to heal us, restore us, and bring us back to Himself.
The cross reveals God’s righteousness and love most deeply. God did not treat sin lightly because of His love, nor did He give up on sinners because of His righteousness. Jesus Christ Himself bore our sins, so that through Him we could be forgiven and reconciled to God. He suffered for our transgressions, so that through His redemption we could receive healing and peace. The cross shows us that God’s love does not excuse sin; instead, at immeasurable cost, He rescues us from sin so that we can live a renewed life.
Very often, God’s righteousness also tests what is in our hearts. When someone hurts me, I ask God to vindicate me; yet when God points out my pride, self-righteousness, bitterness and unforgiveness, I may start making excuses for myself. It is easy for us to welcome God’s righteousness when we want it applied to others, while wanting only His love when it comes to ourselves.
But those who truly know God not only believe that He will deal righteously with others; they are also willing to let His righteous light shine into their own lives. They not only long to receive God’s love, but are also willing to let that love flow through them to those who have hurt them. Lord, I want to follow David’s example in trusting Your righteousness and receiving Your love, so that I may be willing to repent, forgive, and allow You to change me.
Prayer
Righteous and loving Heavenly Father, please tear down the self-righteousness within me. Do not let me become like a Pharisee who sees the speck in someone else’s eye but cannot see the plank in my own, noticing other people’s faults while avoiding my own sin. Holy Spirit, please shine Your light into the pride, self-righteousness, bitterness and unforgiveness deep within me, so that I no longer defend myself, but humbly repent, submit to Your truth, take up my cross daily and follow Christ, reflecting on the righteousness and love revealed in the cross of Christ. Help me to follow Christ by dealing righteously with myself while showing grace, forgiveness and love to those who have sinned against me.
Father, because of Your beloved Son Christ and His crucifixion, I believe that everything You do is righteous and full of love. I am willing to lay down my own control and claim to sovereignty and let You reign fully in my life. Not my will, but may Your will be done in me. Please use every circumstance to refine my life and change my thoughts, motives and perspective, so that I no longer live centred on myself, but am guided by truth, renewed by grace, and increasingly reflect Your character of righteousness and love, living in unity with You.
In the holy name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
