David, as a great king and warrior, had just declared in this psalm that God was his Rock, his stronghold and his refuge. He then turned his eyes away from himself and exclaimed in deep wonder: O LORD, what is man that You care for him, the son of man that You think of him?
面对这位无限伟大的造物主,大卫深知人的渺小与有限,人的生命不过是一口气,年日如同影儿,转瞬即逝(第4节)This is not a sigh of self-pity, but the reverence and gratitude of someone who had experienced battles, deliverance and grace before the Most High God. Before this infinitely great Creator, David knew deeply how small and limited human beings are. “Man is like a breath; his days are like a fleeting shadow.” Yet how is it that we have received such abundant grace, that God would care for us and think of us? This grace deeply touched David’s heart, so that before God he no longer dared to boast about his own ability or achievements, but instead humbly counted God’s kindness all the more.
God’s “knowing” of us is not merely that He knows our names; it also includes the deep care of a father for his child. He knows our weaknesses, wounds and fears, and He also knows the struggles we have never spoken about to anyone. God’s “care” is not merely passive sympathy, but His active care and support. Even when we feel insignificant or even forgotten by the world, God has never overlooked us.
Ever since humanity sinned, departed from God and became spiritually poor, we have often measured our worth by the standards of the world, tried to prove ourselves through achievement, and looked for security in the approval of others. Once we experience failure, weakness or loneliness, we can easily begin to question whether we are worthy of being loved, and the enemy also accuses us within: “You are insignificant. You have no value. No one in this world truly cares about you.” But this verse reminds us that our worth does not lie in what we “amount to”, but in the fact that this great God cares for us and thinks of us, and that we are fully accepted and treasured by Him. Our life, breath and gifts are all God’s grace.
This grace is revealed even more deeply in Jesus Christ. God not only created us, but through Christ He also gave His life for us and paid the price for our atonement; He has also given us the Holy Spirit so that we may experience His presence. Therefore, through the presence of the Holy Spirit, we can experience even more deeply how God cares for us and thinks of us. We do not need outward achievements to gain God’s attention, nor do we need to prove our worth by our own strength. We were unworthy, yet we have received His grace; we are weak, yet we are deeply held in His love.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, David, one of the greatest kings in history, said that he was nothing, so how much less am I? Yet You care for me and think of me. When I see my weakness and unworthiness, please help me to see Your grace again. You not only created me, but through Jesus Christ You gave Your life for me and redeemed me from sin.
Thank You for loving me with a love so wide and long and high and deep. Please forgive me for believing the lies of the enemy, for so often being deceived by the standards of the world into measuring myself by them, and for trying to prove my worth through my own strength and achievements. When I feel insignificant, or when I am overwhelmed by anxiety and fear, please remind me of this wonderful truth: my worth is found in the fact that You care for me and think of me.
Father, what am I that You should love me so deeply? May I remember this grace all my life, no longer boasting in myself, but finding my satisfaction in Your love alone, walking in Your presence and under Your guidance with a humble and thankful heart.
In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen!
