Psalm 147 shows us that what God values is completely different from what the world values. Horses were symbols of strength and military advantage in ancient warfare, while “the legs of a man” represent human ability, speed and capacity for action. The world values ability, efficiency and achievement, believing that the stronger we are, the more secure we will be, and the more capable we are, the more valuable we become. Yet God says that His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse, nor His delight in the legs of a man.

The more capable we are, the easier it is to rely on ourselves; the more gifted we are, the easier it is to forget that we are only created beings. We often think that if we work hard enough, are clever enough and act quickly enough, we can solve the problem and turn things around. Even in ministry, we can become busy doing God’s work without truly seeking God; busy trying to change our circumstances while being unwilling to let God change us. We may appear to be giving ourselves for God, while actually relying on ourselves, using results to prove our worth, and even without realising it, taking the glory for ourselves.

Why does God delight in those who fear Him and put their hope in His unfailing love? Because those who fear God know that they are not God. They are willing to lay down their pride and acknowledge their limitations. Those who hope in His unfailing love know that true security is not found in ability, circumstances or achievements, but in God’s grace and faithfulness. God is not looking for someone who can do everything, but for someone who is willing to let Him reign and to look to Him in everything.

Jesus possessed the glory and power of God, yet He took on human likeness, humbled Himself and obeyed God the Father, even willingly going to the cross. When He entered Jerusalem, He did not ride a warhorse, a symbol of military power, but a donkey’s colt, showing that He did not establish His kingdom through worldly power. He was crucified in weakness, yet was raised from the dead by the power of God. What His whole life revealed was not human self-reliance, but complete submission to the Father: “Yet not as I will, but as you will.” True victory does not depend on how strong we are, but on being willing to surrender completely to God’s will.

Today, we need to examine ourselves: Is everything I do dependent on my own ability, or am I seeking God’s will? Am I rushing ahead without waiting for God? Do I think that because I have experience, gifts and solutions, I no longer need God? Moses went through forty years of refining in the wilderness before God sent him. God does not simply use our abilities; He also deals with our self-reliance, leading us from trusting in ourselves to trusting in Him, and from being in control ourselves to complete surrender.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for saving me through the cross. Please put to death all the natural pride, self-righteousness and self-reliance within me. Shine Your light on me and show me when I rely on my abilities, when I am eager to prove myself, and when I use the results of ministry to prove my worth instead of truly obeying You.

Lord, please break me, so that I do not substitute my own will for Yours. Please take back the sovereignty of my life, so that I no longer run in my own strength, but seek You and follow You in everything. May I fear You all my life and put my hope in Your unfailing love. Let Christ reign within me.

In the holy name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
