This psalm was written against the background of Israel’s history of suffering, living in foreign lands, and enduring oppression under the powers of surrounding nations. When the people of Israel faced the forces of darkness, threats from enemies around them, and heavy economic pressures and struggles for survival, they could easily turn to earthly rulers for help and seek political alliances—what the passage describes as putting their “trust in princes” and in mortal men. The psalmist wrote this psalm precisely to turn the eyes of the people completely away from the false securities of this world and back to the one and only true God in the midst of instability and turmoil.

We enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise. God is enthroned as the Holy One, the praise of Israel. When we rise up to praise God instead of allowing our circumstances and emotions to weigh us down, we experience God’s presence and power. No matter how low our spiritual condition may be or how weak our lives may feel, as long as we praise God, we can overcome the flaming arrows of discouragement, despondency and heaviness that the enemy fires at us. For God has ordained praise from the lips of children and infants.

Hallelujah, praise God. The psalmist emphasises that we praise God not only with our mouths, but also with our hearts. “Praise the LORD, O my soul.” To praise is to turn our eyes away from our circumstances and ourselves and towards God, making Him the centre of our lives and daily living. It is to practise on earth the life of heaven, as it will be in the new heaven and the new earth—when people from every nation will praise and worship the LORD. He is the centre of all praise and worship. Praise is not a religious ritual, but a reality to be lived out in our lives. As long as we live, we are to praise Him. This means practising it in the reality of everyday life: giving thanks in all circumstances and rejoicing always, so that we may continually praise God.

One precious spiritual principle David learnt throughout his life was praise. When he faced danger and betrayal, and when he was pursued by his own son like a homeless fugitive, he reached out to God in faith and cried out to Him. Through his repeated experiences of suffering and deliverance, he knew that all of these were surrounded by God’s abundant grace, so he made this declaration of faith: “I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.” (Psalm 27:13 NIV) David wrote these psalms of praise with his very life.

今天凡诚心赞美敬拜耶和华的地方,岂不是被掳的得释放、被囚的出监牢,伤心的得医治,报告神悦纳人的喜年?!Later in this psalm, the words point directly to Jesus Christ: He gives sight to the blind, lifts up those who are bowed down, watches over the alien, and sustains the fatherless and the widow. His kingdom endures forever... Today, wherever people sincerely praise and worship the LORD, do we not see captives set free, prisoners released, the broken-hearted healed, and the year of the LORD’s favour proclaimed?! The dead are raised and miracles are revealed. Jesus has conquered death and the powers of darkness; all authority belongs to Him, and He holds the keys of death and Hades. Because He has risen, all humanity has been given hope. As we walk the way of the cross, sin is put away, the strongholds of the old creation are torn down, and we experience the healing and deliverance of Jesus and the power of His resurrection. Joy rises within our spirits, and praise naturally flows out! Hallelujah!

Prayer

Abba Father, in the morning my heart will praise You; let everything that has breath praise You! My God, You rule over all things and are infinitely great, yet You are willing to dwell in the heart of every sinner who humbles himself before You. Please teach me and remind me that when the people around me and the things that happen do not go the way I want, and when the enemy fires thoughts of anger, frustration and complaining at me, help me to turn to You and praise You. Let me follow the example of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, and say, “Father, for this was Your good pleasure.” Help me to see that You use difficult circumstances and things that do not go according to my wishes to train me to rise up and fight the spiritual battle—not to gratify the sinful nature, but to set my mind on what God desires. Rescue me from the old creation and from the old patterns of thinking and emotion, and make me a vessel of praise. I will praise the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live! Hallelujah, praise the Lord.

In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
