This is a psalm of David. David cries out to God for help and deliverance. His faith is not based on how much good he has done for God, but on God’s steadfast love (Hesed).

When he faces those who persecute him, he calls on God’s justice, not to take revenge, make himself feel better, or prove that those who persecute him are bad while he is good; rather, it is so that “they may know that this is Your hand, that You, Lord, have done it”—so that people may come to know God and receive salvation.

The situation described in Psalm 109 is ultimately fulfilled in the Lord Jesus in the New Testament. When He was insulted, the Lord Jesus did not retaliate; when He suffered, He made no threats, but entrusted Himself to the One who judges justly. In the end, God raised Christ from the dead, so that the world might know: “This is Your hand; You, Lord, have done it.” In this way, God revealed His ultimate and unfailing love and brought about this precious salvation.

祷告Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father:

This morning I come before You. As I meditate on this passage of Your Word, I thank You for shining Your light on me. I repent before You, because without realising it, I have fallen away from living by faith and grace and started walking down a path of relying on my own works and trying to justify myself by being a good person and doing good deeds.

When others praise me, I feel happy; when others say something negative about me, I become angry and upset—I have actually built my faith on my own behaviour. Now I turn back to You and cry out to You: please save me according to Your steadfast love. Lead me onto the way of the cross and self-denial, and deliver me from relying on myself, exalting myself, building up my own image, pride, judgement, and unforgiveness.

Please help me recognise the corruption of my old self and practise denying myself in every circumstance. When I am being denied and feel hurt inside, help me quickly turn to God, rely on the Holy Spirit, take up my cross, and fight against every voice within me that resists, argues back, makes excuses, and tries to protect myself. Help me die to my old self and continually let go of my old life. In every circumstance, train me to obey Your command to love You and to love others, so that Christ may continually increase within me, become my life, and reign within me.

In the name of the Lord Jesus, Amen.
