Psalm 108 shows us an important spiritual principle: true victory does not depend on how much help we receive from people, but on whether we rely on God. When the psalmist faced the attacks of his enemies, he did not place his hope in people, but cried out to God: “Give us help.” He was not rejecting human help, but recognising that human ability is limited and that only God’s help is decisive.
When we are in difficulty, we often first ask, “Who can help me?” but seldom ask, “How does God want me to rely on Him?” When people help us, we feel at peace; when they do not, we become anxious, fearful, disappointed, and even resentful. In fact, this reveals what we are truly relying on. Sometimes God allows human help to become less available or even fail, not because He has left us, but because He wants to lead us out of dependence on people and teach us again to look to Him alone.
“With God we will gain the victory.” King David set an example for us. A person who truly belongs to God is not someone who never feels weak, but someone who still knows whom to rely on in weakness; not someone who never faces battles, but someone who knows who is fighting for him in the middle of the battle.
The “enemies” we face today are not people around us. They are something inside us, it can be fear, discouragement, temptation, sin, pressure, and anything that keeps us from doing God’s will. So spiritual warfare is first of all a battle over “whom we rely on”. If we rely on ourselves, we can easily collapse under pressure; if we rely on God, we can receive fresh strength even in our weakness.
“For He will trample down our enemies.” This sentence is especially precious because it reminds us that God does not stand at a distance simply watching our battles. He is personally involved, and He is the One who ultimately brings victory.
Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, I confess that when I face difficulties, I often look first at my circumstances, at people, and at my own ability, instead of turning to You straight away. Lord, please turn my eyes back to You. Let me understand that although You can use the help of others, it can never become my ultimate source of security. When I face enemies, difficulties, pressure, and spiritual battles, please give me faith so that I will not be afraid, shrink back, or fight in my own strength. Teach me to quietly rely on You and to receive fresh strength in You.
No matter what I face today, I choose to declare: I do not rely on people, and I do not rely on myself; I rely on the Lord alone. Because I rely on God, I will receive strength from Him; the One who truly tramples down the enemy and leads me into victory is my God. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.
