Psalm 130 is a psalm of repentance. The psalmist falls into the depths of despair because of his own sins, and from the depths of his heart he earnestly looks to God for forgiveness. Here, the psalmist asks a profound rhetorical question: if the Lord were to examine our sins, recording every hidden thought, proud motive, judgemental word, and selfish action, and judge us according to His perfectly righteous and holy standard, not one person could stand before Him.

Yet the word “but” that follows brings an astonishing turning point and hope: but with You there is forgiveness. God is not only righteous, but also full of mercy and forgiveness. His forgiveness does not mean lowering His holy standard or turning a blind eye to our sins. Rather, He laid all our sins upon His one and only beloved Son, Jesus Christ. Through Christ’s sacrificial shedding of His blood on the cross, we receive the grace of forgiveness.

God’s forgiveness is never intended to allow us to continue indulging ourselves, thinking that since there is grace and God will forgive us, sin no longer matters. On the contrary, the purpose of God’s forgiveness is “so that You may be feared”. True fear of God does not come from the fear of punishment that makes us want to run away. Rather, as we come to know His holiness and righteousness, the overwhelming grace of being forgiven produces gratitude and love within us, leading us to repent completely and hate sin.

A person who has truly experienced forgiveness will also begin to see others differently. We no longer hold tightly to revenge and judgement in our own hands, but learn to entrust judgement and vindication to God, replacing condemnation with mercy and bitterness with forgiveness.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You, because You are a holy and righteous God. If You were to keep a record of my sins, I know that I could not stand. Thank You for giving me endless grace and forgiveness in Christ.Lord, please forgive me for so often “keeping a record” of other people’s sins, holding tightly to their offences, and allowing my heart to be filled with bitterness and unforgiveness, while forgetting that I myself am a sinner who has received such great grace.

Holy Spirit, please engrave deeply upon my heart the grace of forgiveness accomplished through the cross. Help me not to take Your grace for granted, but let the love I have received through forgiveness produce in me a true fear of You. May Your forgiveness not only set me free from condemnation, but also transform my life, enabling me to turn away from sin, live out love and forgiveness, and become someone who reveals Your grace.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
