Psalm 130 begins “out of the depths”, yet ends with “redemption”. The psalmist sees his own sin and also recognises his own helplessness. He knows that if he keeps looking only at himself, he will become more and more discouraged. So he does not stay centred on “self”, but turns his eyes towards the loving and righteous God.

“I wait for the Lord, my soul waits; and in His word I put my hope.” Why can he still wait? Because he believes that God does not simply point out people’s sins; He also wants to deliver them from sin. So in the end he says: “He Himself will redeem Israel from all their sins.” This is the hope running through the whole psalm.

It is not, “I can change myself,” but, “God will bring redemption.” We often face the same weaknesses again and again. We know we should not hold on to bitterness, yet we still struggle to let it go. We know that pride is damaging our relationships, yet we are still unwilling to humble ourselves. We know that certain habits are binding us, yet again and again we return to the same place. We keep following our selfish desires and even say, “This is just who I am.” “I cannot change.” But Psalm 130 reminds us that God’s grace of forgiveness is meant to produce in us a heart that fears Him.

“To redeem from all sins” is God’s promise, but it also calls for our response. When we see our own problems, we do not need to run away, nor do we need to struggle in our own strength. What we need to do is humbly return to God, confess our sins, and turn away from them. Our hope does not depend on how strong our own willpower is, but on how real and powerful God’s redemption is.

Prayer:

Lord, please let me see the reality of my sinful nature, and help me to believe more deeply in Your redemption. When I face the same weaknesses and failures again and again, do not let me fall into despair, and do not let me make excuses for myself.

Lord, please help me learn to rely on Your salvation and to take up my cross and follow You every day. Those strongholds that I am powerless to change by myself, and those sins that have bound me for a long time—please intervene personally and lead me to overcome every power of sin.

My hope is not in myself, but in You. For You will redeem me and lead me out of all my sins. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.
