Psalm 131 shows us the psalmist’s deep humility. This is a profound declaration from a life that has been deeply dealt with by God. The psalmist is not saying, “I know nothing, so I’m not going to bother anymore.” Rather, before God he acknowledges: I am not God, and I do not need to become God. Before God, he truly recognises his proper place and honours God as great.
After humanity fell into sin, one of our deepest problems has been the desire to step outside God’s sovereignty, make our own judgements, and become our own master. One of the greatest battles in the spiritual life is not only with outward sin, but with the “self” within.
I want to control. I want to prove myself. I want to explain myself. I want to seek justice for myself. I want others to understand me. I want to know why God does things this way. Even when we pray, we may still be telling God: “Lord, this is how the situation should be resolved.” But the psalmist comes before God and says, “My heart is not proud.” In other words: Lord, I am willing to acknowledge that You are God, and I am not.
“My eyes are not haughty” means that the psalmist does not overestimate his own perspective. He knows that what he can see is very limited, so he does not jump to conclusions based on what he sees. We often see only the surface of a situation and quickly judge people, circumstances, and even God; but the psalmist knows: what I see is not the whole picture, and what I know is not everything. So he does not treat his own understanding as the final answer.
“I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me.” This shows even more clearly the psalmist’s reverence for God. It does not mean that he does not think or that he avoids responsibility, but that he knows what is his responsibility and what belongs to God’s sovereignty.
Prayer
Lord, please shine Your light on that “self” within me that wants to be in charge. When things do not go according to my will, I become anxious; when others do not understand me, I rush to prove myself; when I am hurt, I want to seek justice for myself; and when I see the weaknesses of others, I easily put myself in the place of judgement. Lord, please forgive me and help me see that behind all these things is my unwillingness to surrender sovereignty to You.
Lord, please humble my heart and keep my eyes from being haughty. Help me no longer judge others according to my own perspective, doubt You because of temporary circumstances, or treat my own judgement as the final answer. Teach me to humbly seek You in everything. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in Your sight.
Lord, please remove from me pride, self-righteousness, the desire to control, and the need to prove myself, and help me continually return quietly to You. Let me know that You are God, and I am not; You hold tomorrow, while I remain faithful today; You know all things, and I will trust in You alone forever.
